Jealousy's a Witch by Louisa West

Rosie is still just trying to live a quiet life. But she's finally made a friend! A friend who's now living with her. Which puts a little pinch on her, ahem, private life. Declan has been sleeping on her sofa after his living space was destroyed in the last book but maybe they were moving a little too fast. Especially since a woman who just came to town seems to have some tie to Declan. But of course, all of that pales to the fear she has when Maggie disappears...
Another book that's a little thin on plot or character building but the series itself seems like it could be quite enjoyable.

Charms and Firearms by Trixie Silvertale

Mitzy is going on a trip with Rory Bombay. She's been warned against him but she's decided that she knows best. They are going just out of town to a ski hill that's seen better days and an owner who is a decided lush. Of course, it's Mitzy who discovers a body on the hill. She and Rory also do a quick search of the body (who, even in 2020 when this was written, doesn't know to leave a body where it is?). It's a photographer who has some incriminating evidence on an SD card that eventually makes its way to the police.
I'm going to read the next book in the series because I got a three-book file from Kindle Unlimited but I am really not liking Mitzy. I get that she's young but she is not listening to anyone in her life and is doing things that will actively get her potential love interest in trouble.

Bodies from the Library 2 -- an Anthology

No Face by Christianna Brand

A psychic, Mr. Jospeh Hawk, is certain he knows the identity of a serial killer. Yes, he often fakes many of his tricks but he might have some skill. But his assistant Delphine (sp?) is in danger. Would he prefer that she be hurt in order to fulfill his predictions? Or hers?

Three stars

Before & After by Peter Antony
An old woman dies. Mr. Verity, an amateur detective, believes it is her husband and the nurse. Inspector Sparrow thinks there might be more to it. And a little bit of honest police work might just prove him correct. So why let Mr. Verity direct that they be picked up? Well, in real life, if someone is around so many bodies, usually someone gets suspicious...

Four stars - mostly because finally someone is suspicious of the detective

Hotel Evidence by Helen Simpson
Henry Broadrib (sp?) is startled that his wife, Sissy, wants a divorce. He is loathe to acquiesce as it means that he will have to paint himself in a bad light. But he give in and willingly accepts a hot water bottle when she passes it on to him. But it might be harder than they both think as Henry is so very likable that no one wants to report against him.

Three and a half stars - amusing but not really a mystery story nor is there any suspense

Exit Before Midnight by Q. Patrick
Carol Thorne (sp?) is working overtime right now to help with a merger. Her job ends at midnight so she's splashing out with a nice hairdo before she has to go back to work, helping the shareholders close the merger. When she returns, there is a threat of murder that has been left in her typewriter in the form of a memorandum.

Four and a half stars - as one of the longer stories, it is better developed. It gives us better character development and allows for a nice build up of suspense.

A Joke's a Joke by Jonathan Latimer
A young man, Barnes, likes to play pranks on people. His latest is to introduce his own wife, Mary Lou, to his particular favorite to play pranks on. But it doesn't quite turn out like Barnes thinks it will.

Three and a half stars - not a mystery but a fun little story

The Man Who Knew by Agatha Christie
A man is home but he knows something is wrong. Then he sees the word on his theater pamphlet, "Don't go home." A gun found in his apartment, his uncle murdered... there is just a chance that he can turn this night around.

The Almost Perfect Murder Case by S. S. Van Dine
Philo Vance is telling stories about some of his more famous cases. In this one, he mentions that even the most perfectly planned crimes may go off the rails for the most ridiculous of reasons. In this story, someone decides to verify a translation and suddenly, the teeth of a dead body might not be as identifiable as originally thought.

Three stars - serviceable

The Hours of Darkness by Edmund Crispin
The book opens on Christmas Eve. There is a game of hide and seek afoot. But rather than using it for making love to their partners, a murderer uses the time for other pursuits. Gervase Fen is nearby to connect this case to an earlier one, one in which a brother and sister

Three stars - at least this one is a mystery but a little convoluted

Chance Is a Great Thing by E. C. R. Lorac
Poor Peggy is ready to get married but her only relation, her aunt, is doing so poorly she's afraid to leave her. Her neighbors encourage her to get married and go on her honeymoon; they'll keep an eye on her. But then auntie dies...

Four stars - for as short as it is, you get a clear picture of the characters

The Mental Broadcast by Clayton Rawson
The Great Merlini is trying to come up with a new card trick. Our narrator is not impressed.

Two and a half stars

White Cap by Ethel Lina White
Tess is trying to calm herself down. She has been taken in by a man who was a swindler and her work is uncertain. At work, Miss Ratcliffe is basically taking over the company and she has Tess in her sights. Of course, Ratcliffe is the one who ends up dead.

Three and a half stars

The Adventure of the Dorset Squire by C. A. Alington
The lights go out but then a lot of stuff happens, but, while some of it is comedic, none of it is a murder nor a suspense story.

Two stars

The Locked Room by Dorothy L. Sayers
Lord Peter is at a house party where he meets a young woman named Betty. She is engaged but she and Lord Peter spend their time with some light flirting (maybe a little more). Her good mood is ruined when her uncle comes home proclaiming that he is ruined. He yells at Betty and his wife and declares that he will commit suicide. Lord Peter is skeptical. Usually people who commit suicide don't declare it so baldly. But, the next morning, the man is dead. Luckily, Lord Peter knows exactly what happened.

Damsel in Distress by Carola Dunn

Both Daisy Dalrymple and Philip Petrie's families have assumed that the two of them will marry. But the two are more friends than anything else and Philip has always felt some obligation to Daisy after her brother (his best friend) died. But Daisy has Alec and Philip... Philip has just met Gloria Arbuckle, daughter of an American millionaire. Her golden hair has turned his head and he's pretty sure he's falling in love. Except that Gloria has been kidnapped. He can't call the police so he calls in Daisy. And she is delighted to help her old friend. Especially if it means he'll marry her and finally get their families off their backs.
It's going to take some maneuvering, and Daisy herself ends up kidnapped for a little bit. The end is quite happy with Daisy and Alec taking the next step and Philip finding his place in the world.

Flowers for the Judge by Margery Allingham

In London, there is a family publishing firm, Barnabas.  There are a number of people working there including cousins: Mike (who always just misses the next big thing,  Ritchie (handsome but intelligent) and Paul (a known liar and bragger who is currently missing but no one seems concerned. There are also some other assorted family members: John (irascible), Miss Curly (seems to know the people she works with rather well), Gina (Paul's American wife) as well as one or two others. Peter Riggett who becomes a witness for the court though he knows more than he was telling.
One of the cousins is found dead in a locked room. The problem is that the body has been dead for several days; he was not in the room the night before. And it is that point that gets one of the other cousins arrested for murder. It will be up to Campion to solve the mystery.
This was a well crafted story that was a little convoluted but highly enjoyable.

Big Nate: Nailed It! by Lincoln Peirce

Another fantastic book in the Big Nate series. We get to see all of our favorites as they have new adventures. Spitsy has some hiccups in his path to love with Pickles (who turns out to be a decent chess player.) Francis and Teddy continue to be his best friends.  Sherman has a little time outside of his cage. Mrs. Czerwicki continues to monitor the detention room.
Nate struggles with love when Todd Dunfy has a girlfriend. He also looks for a good luck charm but it quickly goes away. We also get a series of strips where Nate discusses his rather unique hair-style.

The Body Politic by Catherine Aird

When Peter Corbishley, member of Parliament is heckled during the opening speeches of a battle reenactment, "Why don't you drop dead?" He doesn't but one of his constituents, Allen Shaw, does. The man had asked him for help because he was scared that his mineral company employer is going to force him to go back to a country that wants to kill him after he accidentally killed a pedestrian.
This was another quick listen that was sometimes convoluted to follow but may have been easier if I had read it with my eyes.

Seashells, Spells & Caramels by Erin Johnson

Imogen's scrimped, saved, and lived as simply as possible in order to save up for her dream. She was adopted and has always felt like she was on the outside of life but an unexpected order from her boss for a wedding cake that goes over better than she ever thought gives her just enough money for the bakery she's always dreamed of.
At the wedding, two people make some very odd remarks about her cake. There are a wink and a nod that Imogen doesn't understand. One of the guests even hands her a flier about a cooking contest. Imogen is confused but she decides to bake for the contest, getting to the point of wrapping her contribution in the flier, just as the instructions say. It's just too bad that her house catches file that night and she is left with nothing. Except that her submission seems to have made it in because she gets instructions on how to get to the baking contest. She is again confused as to how she is able to get there but it looks like Imogen actually has some magic and the baking contest is to become the next chef of a magical world. It seems the last chef died under mysterious circumstances but we don't learn much about that in this story. Instead, the focus is on world-building (which is really well done; enough revealed that we know what is going on but not too much of an info dump) and on the baking contest.
A really nice start to a new series.

Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson

I thought I had heard about this book from NPR Best Books but it wasn't on this year's list so It may have been a podcast. The layout of the book is incredible. The first person narrator writes and self-publishes books on how to write books. He starts with laying out the rules from the Golden Age of Detectives and then follows them... to the letter but not necessarily the law.So we see not only the full story of the book but the building blocks as well. And details are deftly woven throughout the book like, "x won't happen for 6 more chapters" or " you won't find out about x until Chapter 27." The ending was a bit fantastical and there were definitely some plot holes but I really enjoyed this book. I have the ebook on reserve to see if the experience of  reading it in print is different from the audiobook.
Ernest Cunningham, our first person narrator, is meeting his family for a reunion. As it happens in most good mystery stories, everyone there is hiding something. Chapters unfold and we learn that, indeed, everyone in his family has killed someone. We start with Ernie's brother and move on from there as the story moves in and out and all around fulfilling it's own self-prophecies about mystery novels.

Sinfully Delicious by Amanda M. Lee

When she was younger, Stormy Morgan wrote a thinly veiled version of her hometown Shadow Hills. It hit the best seller list and Stormy hit the road. She achieved her dream of getting out of town but left her serious boyfriend behind. Now she's back in shame (her second book tanked) and it feels a lot like high school. She's back working at the family diner, she's hanging out with a lot of her same friends, and she's still feeling attraction for the now-sheriff. But he's with someone else.
Stormy does get to spend some time with her ex when she stumbles across the body of a dead man. Yes, the man was hated by most in town but her grandfather is the one who had an argument with him recently. And her grandfather is the one dodging an interview with the police.
This was an okay story but not the usual level that we get from Lee. The characters are a little thin, the relationship of our protagonist and her ex overlaps with the relationship he's in during most of the book and the magic, have I not mentioned it yet? It's because it's barely there. I'll stick with the next book in this series but may be sticking with the witches of the midwest (which are reference in this book several times.)

Two Parts Sugar, One Part Murder by Valerie Burns

I liked the cover of this book and figured I should give it a try. I wasn't really paying attention to the story until they mentioned the border of Indiana and Michigan where I grew up. Instantly, I started paying more attention - I know this town!
That wasn't what kept me reading though, instead it's getting to watch Maddy slowly figure out how to be an adult standing on her own two feet.
As we get to know her, it seems that Maddy has always been cossetted and protected by her colonel father. After her ex dumped her basically at the altar, Maddy is ready for a change. Inheriting her aunt's bakery in New Bison makes for an opportunity to get out of town. Once there, she finds out that she's also inherited a large English mastiff named Baby. But there is also a mystery. It seems Maddy's Aunt Olivia was somewhat expecting that she may die and she's left behind the clues for Maddy to follow.
The characters are fun. The mystery is maybe a little thin and there are some threads left hanging but I overall enjoyed the book.

The Time for Love by Stephanie Laurens

Looking for a steel mill to supply his other business concerns, Martin Cynster believes he can talk Miss Sophia Carmichael into selling. When he meets her, he is not shocked by her business acumen (he has too many accomplished women in his family for that, but he is drawn in by her beauty. He is also concerned because not one but two accidents happen while he is there. Why is someone trying to sabotage her business? He knows it's not him and he doesn't think it's the other person vying for her business, Oliver. Oliver and Martin don't know each other well but Martin knows him well enough to assume that he wouldn't do anything so underhanded.
Oliver was an odd addition in this book. I'm assuming that he is sequel bait but we are also left with Toby, Dalziel's son. Also interesting was that all of the conflict for Sophy and Martin was external. They basically see each other and are ready to hop in. The mystery was a little weak and the ending, with the redemption of the criminal, felt odd.

Finlay Donovan Knocks 'Em Dead by Elle Cosimano

When the first book ended, there was an apparent hit set on Finlay Donovan's ex-husband. But who would want to kill him? Well, technically she would. And any of the other women he's cheated on her with could definitely be defined as suspects. But Finn just doesn't want to worry about it. Until it appears that someone else has picked up the contract. Now she's worried because her kids might just be in the line of fire as well.
Lots of characters from the first book, even one that was sort of a passing name. I didn't love the end or the explanation for what was going on with Finn's ex but I did like seeing the friendship between Finn and her nanny/body-burying partner grow.

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle's Magic by Betty MacDonald

Oh my goodness. I had forgotten how much I loved the Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle books. Every book is a collection of children with bad manners who are taught how to behave through some magical cure provided by Mrs. P-W. This particular book includes the tattle-tale cure (every time the children tattle, a big cloud with a tail forms above their heads), the interrupter cure (when someone tries to interrupt, their mouth either stays open or opens and shuts without noise), the sloppy eater cure (pig teaches child how to eat)and, one of my favorites, the cure for a heedless child (pills that make the child slow down so she has time to think before she breaks things.
Of course, none of these would work for today's kids (notwithstanding the fact that none of these things actually exist) but it's still a cute lesson for kids on how to behave.

Rose Pang is the last in her group of friends to be single. Would she like love? Sure. But she's got depression and her mental health is not the greatest. Should she be hooking up with a guy she just met? Maybe not. But he is really hot. Too bad he ghosts her.

Take the Lead by Alexis Daria

This book is a re-release but feels incredibly fresh.
Gina Morales is one of the experts on a television dance program. She has been on the show for awhile but has never won. She needs to come out on top so that she can stay on the show. Hopefully she gets matched up with someone famous. Well, he sort of is.
Stone Nielsen became famous when his family with eight siblings was scouted for a reality show when they lived in the wilderness. He hates it. But he needs the money to help pay for his mom's surgery so... more reality television.
While their show handler feels different, Gina does NOT want to have a showmance. First, she wants to be taken seriously as a dancer and second, she doesn't want to perpetuate the myth of Latinas being oversexed. But she is fiercely attracted to Stone and they start a romance behind the scene.
What happens if their personal time together becomes public? How will the chips fall?
A little too much of a big misunderstanding at the end, just too much drama but overall a fantastic book.

Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano

I thought the third book of this series looked interesting but I wanted to start at the beginning of the series and did not regret it.
Finlay is a divorced mom who is struggling to hold it all together. She has two kids and her ex is now threatening to try and take them away. His fiancee is a very put-together real estate agent and he thinks they should have the children. The latest volley? Firing the nanny. Finlay is stressed out. And now her next book is well overdue. It's just too bad that the conversation Finn has with her agent is misunderstood by one of the other patrons at her lunch spot, she ends up with a contract to kill a man. Looking into his history, Finn understands why he needs to die. She's not going to do it. Of course she's not...
When she suddenly finds herself with a body in her van, Finn's life takes a very strange turn. One that might just be for the better.

Billionaire for the Night by Venus Ray, Stacy-Deanne

Look. I get that short stories are hard. You have to put together a story and draw people in quickly. But it also makes it a LOT harder to turn around assholes for the readers. And James is an asshole. He's rich and handsome and the worst stereotype of the two. There's no discernible reason why Kelly would agree to help him out. With 41 pages, there is no room for redemption. And the next book in the series is another couple so we'll never see more.

Murder in the Third Act by Sonia Parin

Oh, this is a relief to return to the Evie Parker books that were part of the earlier series; the last book made me wonder if I should stop reading the series.
Evie's grandmother is finally here, insisting that everyone call her Toodles. Though a wealthy woman, she doesn't stand on formality. In fact, it's driving the dowager countess a little crazy. But, when a murder happens, the two bond together in trying to beat Evie to the solution.
Evie doesn't want to deal another death. Especially one that happens to one of her house guests. Not at her house, thank goodness, but later, during the third act of a play run through. A play that has some decidedly familiar characters and interactions.

New Witch on the Block by Louisa West

Running from her abusive ex-husband, Rosemary Bell just wants to lay low and raise her daughter, Maggie. She doesn't have a car nor any money, really, but she's found an inexpensive place in a quiet town where her husband isn't going to find her. Just a quiet life is all she needs. Definitely not a woman who seems out to get her. Nor a man who seems to believe she is a witch. And his bride.
The foundation is a little thin and the characters aren't really rounded out but there's a charm to the story and it's nice to read about an older (not old) woman coming into her own.

The Forger family is becoming even more tight-knit with Yor even considering making her latest assignment her last now that her brother seems to be all grown up. We get a large section of Loid trying to connect with the opposition's head (Damian's father) and not succeeding. Anya's last chance to stay in the same group as Damian is coming up. Have I Told You This Already? by Lauren Graham

Lauren Graham is a gifted actress and writer. These essays cover a variety of topics including her work on the Might Ducks television series, stories her father told her (that may not have been completely true), and her time during COVID. Like her other books, this one is quick, witty, all about herself, but doesn't really go deep into any topic. Still, highly enjoyable.

Sparks and Landmarks by Trixie Silvertale

There's good news and bad news when Mitzi wakes up to a fire next door. The good news? She gets out with her life. On the other hand, somebody else didn't. It gets worse when she finds out it's the judge who sentenced her father to jail. Sure, the man has lots of enemies but Mitzi's father is nearby. And he has another connection to the building that makes it even more likely that he is the arsonist.
It will be up to Mitzi and her ghostly grandmother to figure out what is actually going on.

Not Your Ex's Hexes by April Asher

For most of her life, Rose Maxwell had been assumed to be following her grandmother to be the Prima Witch, a force in the supernatural world. In the first book of the series, it was discovered that her sister, Violet, is actually the most powerful of her triplets, it just came in late. And Rose... was relieved. Now, however, she's not really sure what she's supposed to be doing with her life. So she's trying to figure it out. Unfortunately, she misfires on her first foray and ends up neeeding to do some community service with the local veterinarian. Too bad he's her former one-night stand. The one she wouldn't mind repeating.
Damian is a half-demon who tried to make his father proud until the night he accidentally broke a girl's heart and she hexed him. He wants to love Rose but is afraid of what will happen. And his old life still keeps calling and trying to drag him back in.
I didn't connect with Rose and Violet as much as I did with Violet and Lincoln and that's okay. I just didn't see her growing as much as Violet did and there were a few more glossings-over that were fine but could have been played out a little more.

Bad Mormon by Heather Gay

Like a lot of other Housewives of Salt Lake City fans, I really related to the brash new star, Heather Gay. She tries to be there for her friends (doesn't always do it in the right way), she's always wanting the tea, and seems down to have a great time. While what we see may not actually be her authentic self, it sure seems like it is and it's something that normal viewers can relate to. Her book is the same way. We get to see Heather's life growing up in the Mormon church (or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) and how she struggled between wanting to be a good Christian but also having real human urges and feelings.

Encore in Death J. D. Robb

Big time star Eliza Lane has fulfilled her dreams and is living her best life; even returning to the play that made her a star, this time as the mother. She is throwing a party to celebrate but it soon turns into panic when her husband, Brad Fitzhugh, big time star himself, dies.
Dallas and Peabody are thrown in among the bright stars, many of whom have secrets to hide, some of them decades old. But is the motive for this murder rooted in the past or the present? And who really was the intended victim?
There were a lot of red herrings and unexpected twists in this story. I was very much reminded of a particular Agatha Christie mystery which I won't name because I think there are hints to the ending of the story. Some of the red herrings were dealt with a little too quickly but overall I really enjoyed this addition to the Dallas series.
