Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood

Bree has just gotten the most amazing news about being the co-lead for the NIH on a project with NASA. Then she finds out who the other lead is... Levi Ward. He was a few years ahead of her at school and seemingly despised Bree. Now, some of that communication is figured out early (a third of the way maybe?) through the book but there is a LOT of miscommunication for awhile there. Through it though, Levi seems to be the perfect science-man standing up for Bree and making other men respect her (which has been okay in this and The Love Hypothesis but I'd love to start seeing Hazelwood's heroines standing up for themselves at some point.) It's just too bad that, even when these two talk, there still seems to be something further trying to destroy their project. Perhaps it's just bad luck but...
It would have been nice to have a little more of Levi's trauma explored. Oh, and then to throw some more miscommunication in when we had gotten past most of it. Overall a fine book but I hope that Hazelwood's next book breaks out of this formula she seems to have set for herself in the first two. I can take it in two books but it would be nice to have some expansion in the third book.

His Grumpy Childhood Friend by Jackie Lau

The book opens in the middle of Charlotte Tam's worst nightmare, her boyfriend proposing to her at a Toronto Blue Jays game on the big screen. She loves the Jays, hates the public. So why didn't her boyfriend get that?
Years later and Charlotte is generally happy in her job that lets her work from home without having to put on real pants (we hear about that a lot; since I agree with her sentiment, it didn't bother me) and generally not going out except to occasionally meet her friends at a cider bar. One night, she recognizes the boy who used to live next door, Mike Guo. He left suddenly one night and she never heard from her best friend again. But now he's all kinds of grown up and hot. Surely he must have women crawling all over him. He'd be the perfect person to get her back into the dating game!
Mike isn't exactly the stud that Charlotte thinks he is but he has missed his old friend and is delighted  to spend more time with her. The fact that he now has grown up feelings for her is just icing on top of the cake.
I loved that the fake relationship didn't last too long. I loved that most of the conflict from these two was external to their relationship because they talked to each other. The timeline was maybe a little fast but I really enjoyed this book.

Death Down the Aisle by Verity Bright

Lady Eleanor Swift has really gotten herself into it this time. Her good friend Constance is getting married on Saturday but Ellie has just promised to help organize and lead a suffragette march to the police station with a petition to let women onto the force on the same day. And she has to go to the wedding. Poor Constance is already withering under her soon-to-be-mother-in-law's constant disapproval. But Eleanor can't let down the ladies of the village either. It's especially complicated that the wedding might not go off since the groom-to-be, Lord Peregrine Davencourt, was just discovered over the body of his dead former fiancee. Or maybe not so former after all.
On a timeline, Eleanor has to figure out how to juggle the march, preparing to be in the wedding, solving a murder and doing it all without un-endearing herself to her beau, Chief Inspector Hugh Seldon.
Not a lot of character development in this one but Hugh and Eleanor's relations does progress a bit.

A Colorful Scheme by Krista Davis

We saw Professor Maxwell and his author and second wife Jacquie fall back in love with each other in the first few books of the series. Now, they are finally going to be married again. And Florrie's sister is planning the wedding and Florrie is helping. When the book opens, she is helping find Jacquie who has suddenly disappeared. Luckily, she does turn up in time for the wedding; the wedding that has any number of odd characters popping up.
Some of the guests include other authors. One in particular stands out, Arthur Bedlingham, as he is a former flame of Jacquie's. He wasn't actually invited but somehow managed to show up anyway. Also in attendance is a critic who has had harsh words for almost every author there.
The characters are lively and interesting. The mystery is really loosely put together and there is a lot in this story that relies on coincidence but I think regular readers will enjoy this story and new-to-the-series readers will be able to follow along.

Three Kisses, One Midnight by Roshani Chokshi, Sandhya Menon, Evelyn Skye

If I had realized this was an anthology about high school kids, I may not have picked it up. But this was a pretty good trio of stories all revolving around Halloween, a night when the Lady of Moon Ridge is said to walk every 400 years. Perhaps, this year, she might bring a few high schoolers true love.
Onny believes that she belongs with Alexander-the-Great-Looking, but could she be overlooking someone closer to home?
Ash has had a crush on his next-door neighbor Cassidy, the track star, since she moved in. But could it truly be that she returns his feelings?
True was hurt by her last boyfriend, Brad (obviously Chad-adjacent). But can she find love with Orion? A guy who believes in ghost while she is science-all-the-way?
Great respect to the authors who managed to pull parts from each other's stories to really create a nice overlap of details.

Pleasure of a Dark Prince by Kresley Cole

We've seen glimpses of this love story in other books of this series. A dark werewolf who has been watching over a Valkyrie archer who cannot miss or else she feels excruciating pain. The pain Lucia feels is the result of a pact made with a god when she nearly died.
Many, many years ago, Garreth, prince of the Lykae, realized that Lucia was his one true mate. He also realized that she wasn't ready to acknowledge it. So he's been watching over her from afar (don't do this is real life, folks; this is stalking and super creepy).
Lucia has a life mission and that is, every five hundred years, she has to make sure that an apocalyptic evil doesn't occur when Crom Cruach rises. As that time is nearing, she cannot be distracted by a werewolf right now, matter how intriguing she finds him.
There is a long stretch where we read about their history, another where they finally start to sort of get together, then a lot of travel over the world ending up with a long stretch in the Amazon where they awaken another potential world ender but end up with an arrow that can kill a god. Then, as usual, everything is wrapped up in a whirlwind in the last 50 pages or so.

Silkie Stalkings by Erik Henry Vick

It's been a little while since I listened to the first three stories but I don't remember Dru talking like a little girl so much. It's REALLY annoying. She's one of the princesses of darkness and a detective on the New York police force but uses words like "Mommy" and several times her speaking is literally described as being a little girl voice. The premise of these stories has always been interesting and Vick does a great job of weaving in lore from the original shows and from myths but this story just didn't work very well.
Dru and Leery are on a new case. Three men have recently thrown themselves off the George Washington Bridge. Strangely, none of the three have no soul on record as having gone to the afterlife. The two detectives realize that all three victims were using an app of "proprietary magic and technology," Sinder. The app is owned by none other than the King of Sin himself, Dru's uncle Luci. Of course, he will not let any information go easily so there are some battles, both mental and physical.

Tangled Reins by Stephanie Laurens

When the book opens, our hero (the Marquis of Hazelmere) mistakes our heroine (Dorothea Darent) for a country miss out picking blackberries and decides to steal a kiss. When she reacts undecidedly unlike a country miss, he has to reevaluate. What he finds is a girl outside what he's used to dealing with. For one thing, she's a bit older (twenty-two and unmarried, gasp!) and also a bit less than impressed by his prestige.
He again encounters her in an inn yard where she is being heckled by some of his compatriots. After coming to her rescue, Marc is only more entranced by her innate beauty and lack of artifice.
Of course, there are going to be trials and tribulations but these two strong-headed characters will eventually fight their way toward love.
There is a lot of tell don't show when it comes to Dorothea in this book. The entire book roles around the premise that she is so much more than the other debutantes but nobody tells her anything that's going on. Of course she ends up in the situation she does. Blergh.

Deep Kiss of Winter by Kresley Cole

The four Wroth brothers, vampires all, get to find their Mates in this series. This particular story is Malcolm's turn. He's in New Orleans around the time of book four (Dark Need at Night's Edge) when he suddenly sees his female, but he is not the only one seeking her. There are ice fey after her as well. Which is interesting because Daniela "Danii" is half (one third?) ice fey and half Valkyrie. The other fey are after her because she is, in fact, in line to inherit the throne of her people but the current king (a usurper) would rather not have that happen. So it will be up to the two of them to figure out how to make her safe while also dealing with the pesky problem that they can't touch otherwise they burn each other.
This book is somewhat shorter than most of the others in this series but not, by any means, short in comparison to most books. That means that, though the story is packed with much of the history and trivia of the Lore, the relationship between Danii and Malcolm doesn't suffer. In fact, it could have been even a little shorter because there were Just So Many misunderstandings but an overall nice addition to the series.

A Duke at the Door by Susanna Allen

Tabitha Barrington and her twin brother Timothy have been traveling the continent for some time escaping some trouble at home. She is chafing being back in England but she is excited to have the chance to practice her poultices and concoctions at the Duke of Lowell's estate. Especially once she learns that the estate has a number of shapeshifters, one in particular that needs her help.
Alwyn Ap Lewin, Duke of Llewelyn, was held captive in his lion form for a number of years. It became bad enough that, when he was finally freed, he no longer wanted to be a part of the world. But Tabitha intrigues him.
This series is filled with drama and this book is no different. It mirrors the Gothic novels written by one of the characters in the book. Is it silly? Oh yeah. Is it enjoyable in the right mood? Yes. Lots more world building in this one and setups for any number of following books in the series.

Ruby Fever by Ilona Andrews

This is basically a non-stop action book from the first page to the end though it does mellow out a bit in the Epilogue. A lot of loose threads are wrapped up in this book which was nice especially as Andrews have said on their blog that they are not sure whether there will be more books in this series. I'm not sure I loved all of the threads but it was mainly a grand trip. Definitely need to have read the previous books in the series to enjoy this one fully; lots of history and a whole lot of people.
It's time for a final confrontation with Arkan and Catalina is not ready... but it needs to be done. And an illusion mage named Konstantin (who is both related to Alessandro and part of the Russian Imperium) brings everything to a head but Catalina is also dealing with a lost spider that is worth a quarter million dollars, the loss of her mentor Linus (he's not dead but someone sure tried to make him that way), becoming the Acting Warden of Texas, buying new property, her fiance's family coming to visit, and just trying to stay alive as an early-twenties head of her House.

Husband Material by Alexis Hall

In romance, the book usually ends on the Happily Ever After or at least the Happily For Now. If there is a sequel, it usually focuses on a couple adjacent to the one in the first book. Hall continues to break into new (or at least seldom trod) paths by writing a follow up book, one wherein the two characters plan their wedding. I liked the idea of seeing what happens after the credits roll but, though Hall is an amazing writer, I had trouble reconciling everything in this book with what happened in the first, especially since most of this book felt like Luc and Oliver were on the sidelines (i.e. all of the conflicts seem external and, in a follow up book, it seems like there could be more things internal to the relationship), and I didn't especially love the way the book ended. I liked the ending, just not the actual execution.
Luc and Oliver fell in love and are now living in their HEA. But a brush with his ex-boyfriend causes Luc to question whether they are ready to take the next step in their relationship. It sure seems like everyone else is taking that step and maybe even expecting it from them as well. But are even of them really ready?

A Cornish Recipe for Murder by Fiona Leitch

I seem to be on a spate of books centered around the Great British Bakeoff all of which have been fairly enjoyable. This iteration has Jodie Parker involved in the show (though she's not really quite sure why she was chosen.) It's just to bad that there are some weird things going on during the show, mostly centered around her very own bakes. But then one of the crew is murdered. He had only recently joined the team so Jodie isn't sure who would have hated him enough to kill him.
The secondary characters are well-developed including the host who is a drag queen with a secret to hide, the producer with a temper, and some of the crew. We get to see some relationship development between Jodie and Nate and some personal development for Jodie as well.

I'm Glad My Mom Died, by Jennette McCurdy

Okay, I have never actually watched a full episode of anything McCurdy has been in but social media seems to believe I should watch show clips and so I've seen a bundle of them and thought she was hilarious. This behind-the-scenes look at why she was on the shows... not so hilarious. As the title suggests, this is due to the machinations of her mother. And her mom was not okay. Like, not at all. It's surprising that McCurdy sounds as balanced as she is, even being able to turn down the reboot though it might have made her a ton of money. The "chapters" are incredibly short, more like a series of short stories but really interesting to listen to how a star was made.

Kiss of a Demon King by Kresley Cole

Sabine, Sorceress of Illusions is a well-known evil. She has killed other people with power to gain their powers. Except that she really hasn't because she only makes illusions and talks to animals. But she knows she is the fated mate of Rydstrom Woede, the demon who should be king.
Rydstrom has waited centuries to regain his throne. The throne that was stolen from him by the last Big Bad, Omort, who, by the way, is Sabine's half-brother. A half-brother who really wants to bed her but, as a virgin, their society dictates she cannot be taken against her will. But she has just captured him and is teasing him into trying to have sex so that she can bear his heir, as prophesied. But Rydstrom really just wants to take back his throne and is trying as hard as possible to resist her wiles.
As always, there is just So Much going on in this book and, yet, I really enjoy it. Fun book, really moves the overall story along.

After Hours on Milagro Street by Angelina M. Lopez

Alex Torres left Kansas to make a name for herself. Her grandmother was certainly never going to give up her bar so Alex might as well leave. And she's made a name for herself on social media. People know and love her but not everyone. Especially not the manager that just fired her. That's fine. She'll go home. It's time for her generation to pick up Loretta's anyway. But it isn't going to be as easy as she thinks. She and her sisters have never seen eye-to-eye, her grandmother doesn't especially want to give them the business, her former hometown arch nemesis has his eye on the building, and there's a tall, handsome man living in the apartment above the bar who seems to have insinuated himself into her family.
Jeremiah Post is a professor at the local college. He's really enjoyed getting to know the Torres family. But the woman standing in the bar late at night is not someone he recognizes. She's hot though and the more he gets to know about her, the more he likes. Too bad she's so determined to make him the villain.
This was an interesting story and I really liked how Lopez wrapped her own family's history into the story and wove the history of Kansas that many people might not know. There were so many vibrant characters that Alex, Jeremiah, and their relationship all suffered a little but I do hope we see more in this setting.

Dark Desires After Dusk by Kresley Cole

Cadeon Woede is the brother of a king. One who lost his throne because Cade didn't show up when he was needed. But there were circumstances. Still, Cade can't forgive himself and when there's the chance to get a weapon that will finally dethrone the monster who took it from Cade's brother, Cade will do anything to get it. Even give up his own mate. Or so he thinks.
Holly is human. Frighteningly so with her OCD and need for order. So when she's attacked and kidnapped by a group of men... vampires?... and then somehow miraculously makes her way out of what appears to be a sacrifice (of her) situation, she's confused. Even more so when the cute guy who couldn't talk to her on campus suddenly appears to help her out. But is that what she's doing? Suddenly, Holly, unsuspecting math adjunct, is on the run, thrust into a situation that could literally save a world.
I didn't like this one quite as much as the others in the series but it was still enjoyable. I liked the addition of Holly's boyfriend to the story although it became pretty apparent that he wasn't going to last long.

Dark Needs at Night's Edge by Kresley Cole

Murdered by her jealous ex-fiance, Neomi made the decision not to die. Well, at least for her soul not to leave this plane and she became tethered to the earth as a ghost. No one has seen or heard her (except peripherally a toddler) in the last eighty years. So she is astonished when a handsome man buys her mansion. She is even more astonished when he and three other men bring in a fourth who is chained. And this man, this man can see her.Except that he's one of the things that she never believed in, even though she herself is a ghost.
Conrad never wanted to become a vampire. In fact, he was a vampire hunter. So when his brothers turned him 300 years ago, he lashed out and became a killer. Now, he has been drinking the blood of so many other killers, that he has all of these memories from all these other people roiling around in his head. He wants to kill his brothers but they just want to save him. However, his savior might actually be a little ballerina ghost that he's pretty sure is real.
I really thought Cole was pointing toward a different ending which was interesting. This book is like the others in this series with a lot of action and story movement in the last twenty or so pages leaving you wondering how it can all be wrapped up, but then... it is.

Love Binds by Cynthia St. Aubin

This book seems like an end to the series and that is probably okay since may of these characters have gone as far as they can go. Abernathy hasn't changed at all from the first book, Hannah has changed a little, and Morrison has grown the most but that's mostly because he's gone from a human in love with Hannah to a blood-thirsty vampire trying to kill her.
Hannah is supposedly the Alpha of all werewolves but she sure doesn't feel like it. In fact, she hasn't been able to shift since the first time. Plus, even though she dearly wants children, she's still not pregnant. Plus, she's having these weird dreams where the devil wants to wear her skin.
The weirdest part of this book was how Hannah and Mark are supposedly soul mates but they don't talk to each other. Hannah doesn't tell Mark about her dream or fears that Morrison has followed them across an ocean and he has secrets that put Hannah in grave danger.

Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night by Kresley Cole

For centuries, Bowen McRieve has been mourning his lost mate. He has the chance to get her back though when he enters the Hie, the supernatural version of the Amazing race. There, you can win a key that will work twice to send you back in time. He could save his fey bride, Mariah. So why is he so distracted by one of the other contestants, witchy Mariketa?
Mariketa the Awaited is predicted to do great things with her life. If only she could figure out her magic. Yes, she's attracted to the big dumb werewolf but not so much after he leaves her and a few other contestants trapped in a cave for two weeks while evil forces feed on her.
There is SO MUCH going on in this book. That usually annoys the heck out of me in a contemporary but I sort of adore in books where the author is often tongue-in-cheek and really leaning into it rather than trying to stuff too much in.

But Can I Start a Sentence with "But"? by University of Chicago Press

I was really surprised when I saw the page count of this book. On my ereader with the size of font I've chose, it was only 89 pages. Most books about editing and style are... well, super long. It was interesting to me. And I really liked that the author(s) talked about the fact that grammar is more fluid and based on personal choices than many of us would prefer to admit. I also really enjoyed the humor in this book (e.g. if only two people are ever likely to read a paper, maybe it's okay for them to agree on a specific abbreviation because, well, who will know?)
The Q&A format got a little tiring after a while but an amusing book in general.

No Rest for the Wicked by Kresley Cole

This is one of two books centered around the Hie, the supernatural version of the Amazing Race. In this one, Kaderin the Cold Hearted would like to win so that she can use the prize, a key, to go back and save her sisters. They died centuries ago by the hand of a vampire, which is why Kaderin kills vampires now. So why can't she kill this one?
Sebastian Wroth never wanted to be a vampire; his brothers turned him against his will when he was near death. Now, he just hides in his castle waiting for death. And it seems that it has finally come. Except that Kaderin is not going to be his killer. Instead, she is his Bride, a vampire's fated mate. In order to keep her, Sebastian will do anything, even help her get her sisters back.
Like other books in this series, there is a lot going on but still a fun book.

Josie is still discovering how to use her magic. She is thrown off when her grandmother's letters come up telling her how to deal with hexes. She's confused and wary but moving ahead with helping the architect in town, Lewis, learn more about the mill that he is renovating into a retreat center. Meanwhile, old flame Sam is back in town. With his wife. And a baby.
So Josie just keeps living her life until Sam's wife disappears. Then a body shows up. And another body. Plus the levee is under siege with all the rain and there's all the books whispering about a curse and a mystery about Sam's great-aunt. There's... a lot going on in this book. A Hunger like No Other by Kresley Cole

I have no good reason for why this book tickled me so much. I think it was the world building. Vampires and demons and Valkyries and werewolves all hanging out in the world? A fun romp.
The heroine of this story is fairly young at 70 years old. She's gone to Paris to try and research her parents. Not much is known about her father, other than the fact that he is a vampire. Her mother was a Valkyrie. So Emmaline, Emma, is a rarity among vampires, a female. Her arrival in Paris sets off a chain of events when the leader of the Lykae Clan, Lachlain MacRieve (whose conversation was annoyingly written in "Scots") scents her and realizes she is his true mate.
Lachlain has been imprisoned by the vampires for 150 years. They've been burning him with fire over and over and then letting him, as an immortal, regenerate painfully for almost that entire time. But the scent of the woman he's waited hundreds of years for helps him break through the chains (including having to take off his own leg to do it). Of course, when he finds out that she's a vampire... All bets are off.
There is a very short learning curve for Lachlain considering he's been locked up for a long amount of time but Cresley covers that by noting his super-intelligence as well. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

Trouble Brewing by Dolores Gordon-Smith

Something is rotten at Hunt's coffee. Mark Helston, the apparent heir, has just up and disappeared. Jack Haldean is called in by the owner, Mr. Hunt, to investigate. As he's looking into it, the man's niece, Patricia, is having problems in her marriage and Jack gets pulled in as her best friends is one of his good friends as well. Then, Pat's first husband returns from the dead with a story of amnesia having coincidentally worked at Hunts coffee in Argentina, the same place that Hunt is having difficulties with.
It took me a LONG time to read this book. It's fine but it just didn't capture my attention like some of Gordon-Smith's books have. Luckily, I know that some of the later books are great so I'm going to continue the series.

Hello, Molly!: A Memoir by Molly Shannon, Sean Wilsey

I've been on an autobiography kick lately and enjoyed all of them, especially when the authors read them on the audiobook version. This book is definitely worth listening to.
Molly Shannon started performing at a young age. Not on the stage, per se, but with other children. It was one way to control her life after her family was in a car accident when she was four and her mother, sister, and cousin all died. There was a lot left out of Shannon's relationship with her father and enough information to know that she had a hard time while growing up.
We learn about her going to school and really getting into acting, having to scramble in both New York and Los Angeles before finally landing her role on Saturday Night Live.
There isn't much on her life post-SNL but I get the feeling that she hasn't had as much time process that as she has her early life.

Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen

Zoey grew up with a much older father and a volatile mother. Right after they divorced, her mother died and, when Zoey's father remarried, there was no room left for her. But it's okay, because she's going to Mallow Island, to the studio apartment her mother left to her. It's part of a small apartment complex that was bought and refurbished by an author, Roscoe Avanger, who is best known for his book about the Island. He only had one big hit but it was big enough that he could buy several properties and set himself up for the rest of his life.
The first night Zoey is there, one of the other tenants, Lizbeth Lime, dies, buried under hundreds of copies of Roscoe's books. Her death, and Zoey being asked by the property manager to go through the hoarding of printed pages that Lizbeth left behind, sets off a series of events where the other tenants, Charlotte, Mac, and Lucy, will start to intertwine. Before, Lizbeth kept them separated by spying on them all and making everyone stay indoors.
Lots of magical realism in this book up to and including Zoey's invisible bird but woven into the story. The near ending was a little too much but this book is just another reason to really enjoy anything Addison Allen writes.

The Cartographers by Peng Shepherd

Books are often said to create new worlds, but what if maps could as well? Nell Young is struggling with that question. Years ago, her father threw her out of his office over a gas station map. It was stunning because she had lost her mother at a young age and her father had raised her. And he had raised her to love maps. So why would he distance himself over this one?
Now, her father has died under mysterious circumstances and Nell finds that same map hidden in his office. Why? And she's off on an adventure that will have her uniting a group of friends formed in college but who haven't been together in a long, long time. We see the formation and dissolution of that group in first person flashbacks.
Not every voice is unique which makes it sometimes hard to read but this is a whimsical book that lets you escape into its own world for a little while.

The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman

Though this is the second book in a series, my book club assured me I need not have read the first and they were absolutely correct. A fabulous book about retirees solving crimes. A little darker than I was expecting but overall a delight.
The Thursday Murder Club, consisting of Elizabeth, Joyce, Ron and Ibrahim, is getting back together. A series of subplots are delightfully woven together by Osman using all four of these characters as well as local police partners Donna and Chris. Donna and Chris are working on trying to take down a local drug lord. One of her runners decides to take a swing at Ibrahim who is just figuring out how vast the world is. Meanwhile, Elizabeth is struggling as her past, both personal and professional, comes back, even while her husband's dementia is getting worse.

The Mystery of the Blue Train by Agatha Christie

Ruth Kettering is unhappy. She didn't marry her first love, her millionaire father ran him off. But her current husband seems to be no better, flaunting his affairs, running through her money. Even the fabulous, though possibly cursed, necklace that her father gifts her doesn't make her happy. She boards a train to the Riviera anyway but doesn't survive the trip. Her father hires Hercule Poirot to figure out what, exactly, happened.
A lot of the story is told from the third person limited narration focusing on Katherine Grey. Miss Grey has long been a companion and has inherited a tidy sum from her last employer. She is on the same train and actually interacts with Ruth.
An interesting story but not as fairly clued as many in the Christie ouvre.

Zinnia by Jayne Castle

Zinnia Spring's life hasn't been going real great lately. Her parents died, her family is pressuring her academic brother into being CEO of the family corporation, and then a wealthy husband and wife set her up as his mistress to cover up their menage a trois resulting in Zinnia being branded the "Scarlet Lady." And now, trying to track down a matrix talent she's held the focus for (her prism is well suited for matrix talents), she encounters a psychic vampire.
Nick Chastain is a powerful matrix talent but not a psychic vampire. Even if. He did sort of "jump" Zinnia's prism on the psychic plane. Luckily, she works past it (pretty fast, actually) and is able to work with him not only to figure out what happened to her original matrix, but to discover what happened to his father... a decades old murder.
Better than the first book in the series, Castle starts to find her rhythm in her new world.
