You Wanna Be on Top? by Sarah Hartshorne

I didn't pay attention to the subtitle when I reserved this book. I didn't realize this was a memoir and thought this was a history of ANTM. It took me a bit to pivot into enjoying this book, but I was quickly on board.
Sarah starts her story when she's in college, her friend(s) encouraging her to try out for the show. She walks us through her tryouts with a glimpse into how her own life was edited to make her more interesting for the audience.

You with the Sad Eyes by Christina Applegate

I've been on a run of celebrity biographies lately and have to say that I enjoyed this one. Applegate talks about most of the things that I think fans would want to know about. There are a number of names redacted and she has memories that she just can't bring to the fore for various reasons but we get to know about this amazing person who has been acting since she was a child. She talks about her childhood, the famous people she's met at various stages of her life, the shows and movies that she was a part of, and how she is dealing with her MS diagnosis.

The Savage, Noble Death of Babs Dionne by Ron Currie Jr.

I can't remember which podcast I heard about this on and, by the time I got it, had forgotten the story. It took me awhile to get into the book. The prelude kicks off the story with a rare instance of the narrator speaking directly to you, the reader. I had to flip through and make sure the rest of the book did not continue in that vein because that is one of my least favorite conceits for a story. However, I kept going and was drawn into the world of Babs Dionne and her daughters Lori and Sis. The book mainly focuses on Lori and Babs thought we get a rich tapestry of secondary characters as well.
This is a lovely glimpse of so many towns in the rural United States. Once vibrant but depending on one main industry which, when it collapses, takes the town down with it. When that happens, drugs often move in. Babs has become the leader of the town in many ways. Is she a good person? Objectively not. Is she doing the best she can to save the people she loves? Yes.

The Last Lady B by Eloisa James

Every girl dreams of marrying well, especially in the early 1800s. Not every girl would want to marry a man who is seventy years old, older than her father. But not every girl has a sister who also needs to marry and, while both are pretty enough and have a good lineage, their family cannot provide them with a dowry. And Genevieve would like to at least give her sister a chance at love. So she marries Lord Burnsby. And seven months later, she is visiting his hunting lodge in the Highlands. She will meet his heir and the heir's wife. She does not expect Lord Godric, boyhood friend of the heir, nor Lord Burnsby's seemingly mad illegitimate sister, and his daughter. Genevieve certainly doesn't expect to meet Sophonisba, Lord Burnsby's mistress of thirty years. And she certainly doesn't expect to find her own voice and start speaking up. Nor to find love while she's still married.
A Gothic novel in the best sense. I couldn't get past our heroine falling in love while still married but I enjoyed the ghosts, the drama, and, of course, the compulsory madwoman in the attic (although Mima is allowed to roam freely in this book.)

The Murder at World's End by Ross Montgomery

Steven Pike has just left jail. He only has enough money to get to Tithe Hall. Well, to the railway station. He barely makes it to the hall. There's only one problem; no one is expecting him. But the butler quickly pivots and adds him to the crew. They'll need the help. Something big is happening and SOMEONE needs to watch seventy-nine-year-old Miss Decima. She's scared off most of her previous ladies maids. Like The Nanny, he's there so he's pulled into the madness. The viscount is having everyone seal up their rooms so that the catastrophes that Halley's Comet is going to cause (as reported by papers of the time) will be mitigated. But when everyone wakes up the next morning, someone is dead. As the newcomer, one who just got out of jail, Steven is going to have to launcch his own investigation to clear his name.

Mystery and Malice aboard RMS Ballast by P.J. Fitzsimmons, Tim Bruce (Narrator)

Inspector Wittersham has asked Anty if he can help get him onto the RMS Ballast. What Anty doesn't known is that the Inspector has an ulterior motive. He wants to take down the owner of the RMS Ballast for never actually delivering the mail that he is being paid to deliver. Of course, neither knew that he was going to be so desperately seasick.
Anty was only invited because the owners think he is in love with their daughter and his cousin Teddy begged him to come. She has two suitors that will also be aboard. There is an unknown lothario who is also on board. And a crusty captain with a bird that corrects his grammar.
This is a murder mystery and someone will die. But this book also contains a treasure map and hilarity.

Five Little Pigs by Agatha Christie, Hugh Fraser (Narrator)

Sixteen years ago, a famous artist was killed. Of course, it was the long-suffering wife who had endured any number of affairs. Most recently, he had told her that he was leaving her for his latest model, a young, rich girl. Plus, he was trying to send her sister away to boarding school, the sister she had so grievously wronged as a baby and now tried to do everything for.

Their child was sent to Canada. She's now about to get married, but she wants to know whether her mother's letter, proclaiming her innocence, is true or not. No one but Hercule Poirot would be able to solve this case.

The Secret of the Old Clock by Carolyn Keene, narrator Laura Linney

Seventy years later, this book holds up amazingly well. Of course, this is the series that was updated after it was found that the original series was a little, um, dated, especially in regard to the overtly racist overtones. This wasn't the first Nancy Drew book I read, but it's remains one of my favorites.
Nancy sees a young girl run into the road and almost get hit by a bus. Meeting the girl's great aunts sets her on the path of solving the mystery of a missing will. Interestingly, it's almost as much to spite the Topham sisters as it is to help a number of people that Nancy gets involved.

Stay for a Spell by Amy Coombe

Tanadelle "Tandy" de Courcy is a bona fide princess. And, while she knows that many people would LOVE to be a princess, she's not fond of traveling thirty weeks a year. It becomes repetitive. And boring. And she has to follow a lot of rules. But at least she can keep reading. So, when she's cursed by a bookseller and is unable to leave a bookshop, it doesn't seem the worst thing.
Her parents are trying everything they can to undo the spell, including sending seven princes to kiss Tandy. And meeting each of the princes is a delight. At least for the reader. Tandy, meanwhile, is enjoying not having to do her royal duties.
A quite lovely book. It reminded me of Legends and Lattes with a charming world that was just a little sweet.

Agnes Sharp and the Wedding to Die For by Leonie Swann

Bernadette and Jack are getting married. But the Foxglove Manor requires at least twenty guests to come. And it's not like the crew knows all that many people. So they start inviting anyone they can think of. They don't expect an old friend (?) of Bernadette's to show up. Nor do they expect her to die. Is this related to the verger who was also killed? Agnes does feel some guilt about forgetting to tell anyone that he was there. They found him eventually.
The wedding does go off, but with more than the most important hitch. And the ending on this one was... not my cup of tea. I'm going to be VERY interested to read other reviews on this one.

Let's Call Her Barbie by Renée Rosen

This isn't a story about Barbie, despite what the title's implications. This is, instead, a tale about the people who were instrumental in creating both the doll and her mystique. Often, people will refer to Ruth Handler but this book also covers her husband, Elliot and her children as well as coworkers Jack Ryan  (enineer), and Charlotte Johnson and Stevie Klein (fashion designers.)
The story revolves around each, a third person narrator who flips past each person, letting us know what each is thinking and feeling as the idea of an adult doll sparks, then builds, feels like failure, and then skyrockets. Then, as the partnerships start to fall apart.
This is very much a fiction story but reads like narrative nonfiction. An interesting look at the history of all of these people with a lot of research put into it.

Vengeance in Venice by Erica Ruth Neubauer

Jane and Redvers are on their honeymoon and enjoying their time alone. Except they're not as alone as they used to be since Aunt Millie has not only found them in Italy, she's insisting that they attend a party with her.
The soiree is being thrown by Clara, an heiress to the Morton salt company. She's eccentric and rude and Jane is stymied as to how she is a friend of Millie's. It's equally strange that this particular get-together includes a murder, that of Clara's second ex-husband, an Italian poet. The police immediately latch onto Clara's secretary, a woman Jane has met before.
The search for the killer will introduce Jane to a new kind of detective (inspettore) and cause her to question whether she is at good at reading people as she thinks she is.

I Regret Almost Everything by Keith McNally

I picked up this book on a whim, enjoying both the cover and the title. McNally has certainly lived an interesting and varied life including acting, directing, writing, and opening restaurants. I wish we had read more about the restaurants, being in the hospitality industry right now. He also came off as a little to much of a martyr, blaming himself for every relationship in his life that went wrong. He may not have a great personality, and it was mostly a matter of fact recitation rather than self-flagellation but it was still a little tiring.

This Will Be Interesting by E. B. Asher

Most people would be grateful to be brought back from the dead. And, while Galwell the Great's circumstances ARE fairly unique, he still feels like he should be grateful. He's trying very hard to be. But, for the rest of the world it's been ten years while for him it's the blink of an eye. His life just gets even weirder when an assasin tries to take him out.
River kills for the council. This one is weird, though. She's gotten instructions on who to kill but not why. And she always gets the why. She encounters Clara, a journalist who is also an old friend. Seeing her again is one of the reasons River decides to figure out what is going on.
I had no idea how Asher was going to follow the first book. How do you deal withsomeone whose death united a nation, but now the man has returned. I quite enjoyed it.

I'm Not the Only Murderer in My Retirement Home by Fergus Craig

Carol has been released from prison after several decades. She has been deposited in a retirement community that should be quiet, but a murder occurs soon after she arrives. As a confessed serial killer, she comes under suspicion pretty quickly.
80-year-old Geoffrey, a former cop certainly points her out pretty quickly. He is joined in his investigation by Catherine, a retired pathologist, and Margaret who was a barrister, even home secretary for awhile. They don't think the police are moving fast enough so they'll take care of it themselves.
Carol wants to prove her innocence even when it puts her at odds with the people in her home, but will they have to end up working together?
A lovely story that is more than fairly clued. It took me awhile to get into the story but was worth the read.

Finlay Donovan Crosses the Line by Elle Cosimano

The last book ended suddenly with Finlay's live-in nanny, best friend, and body-moving buddy, Vero, being arrested for stealing a large amount of cash from her sorority. Her loss is keenly felt, especially since her attorney has cut off communication to both Finlay and Vero's husband-ish-type-person, Javier.
Finlay isn't okay with that and neither is Javi so they're going to go see Vero. And that turns into helping Vero and suddenly they're breaking her out of the house and tryin to figure out who actually stole the money. This leads them on another madcap adventure where they're again on the wrong side of the law, but Cosimano makes it seem so fun.

The Antique Hunter's Murder at the Castle by C.L. Miller

Bella, recently added to the Lockwood Antique Hunter's Agency, has gone off to track down some more faked antiquities. But is it a trap? Bella disappears and when Freya and Carole come up to see what is happening, they find a dead body.
The owner of the castle has been killed. Carole had met him before and was not impressed, especially in how he treated his daughter, India. Freya nad
From there, the plot gets a little crazy and convoluted. I had to go back and reread the last couple of chapters to really try and get everything.

Brigands & Breadknives by Travis Baldree

We met Fern in a previous book in the series. She's a ratkin bookshop owner. In this book, she's sold her old bookshop and has moved to be closer to her friend Viv, thinking that the move might help her fill the emptiness she's been feeling. And though it's good to be near her friend, she's still not feeling fulfilled. Trying to fill the emptiness, she overdrinks one night and decides that it's going to be a good idea to crawl into a cart. She wakes up well outside of town and discovers the cart belongs to Astryx, the one-eared elf also known as the Oathminder. She's taking a redhaired goblin to get a huge reward.
A lot of adventure in this book and some good character growth for Fern.

The Art Thief by Michael Finkel

Stephane Breitwieser is one of the most prolific art thieves of recent times (at least who has been found.) But he doesn't steal for money. Instead, he keeps all of the art for himself, to look at.
This book covers his early life as well as his meeting of Anne-Catherine, the woman who opens up his world. Previously, he had not really connected to anyone, but mainly to objects. And it is likely that love of objects that helps to spur on his urge to steal art. He doesn't steal for money, at least not before his jail stint, but for the love of the items.
He is eventually caught though and, due to the vagaries of the law, is not jailed though he stole millions of dollars. But they are all non-violent so his time is not as long as one might expect.
The author took some time in building this story, even getting to inteview Breitwieser.
