Wildfire by Ilona Andrews

Just because Nevada Baylor is a Prime doesn't mean that she's comfortable with her level of magic. Nor with the fact that her family is going to have to come out of hiding in order to avoid being put under her grandmother's family tree. And if life weren't complicated enough, she involved, like, involved-involved with Connor "Mad" Rogan. And his ex-fiancee's husband has gone missing so she's come to Connor for help.
This was maybe not as good as the previous two but only a little less weak. I didn't love all of the fiancee and Connor interactions (especially since he was so willfully dense about them) but overall a lovely addition to the series.

Fated Blades by Ilona Andrews

This book is technically a standalone and you really don't need to have read the other two books in the series to have read it since it doesn't really reference either at all. It sort of plops you down in the world of the Kinsmen but there are some rather large gaps in the story anyway (it's typical in the series) so you don't necessarily notice the things that are unexplained.
The book starts with two people whose families are mortal enemies and have been for generations. Matias Baena is shocked to hear Romana Adler is in his boardroom. Their companies have been developing technology sort of parallel to each other and now their respective spouses have run away with the information and it seems that they are going to be selling it to space pirates.
Yes, it's overdramatic and yes, I mentioned the gaps but it was still really fun and I plan on rereading the last 25% before I send it back to KU.

Marion Lane and the Deadly Rose by T.A. Willberg

Marion Lane is only just recovering from the events of the first story when there is a mysterious death caused by an assassin known only as The Florist. But there are also new inquirers coming to Miss Brickett's and someone has slipped Marion a note that one of them is not what they seem. This is on top of the fact that there are mysterious flyers being distributed around the company and a secret subgroup that is intent on changing the way Miss Brickett's fundamentally works. Unfortunately, one of Marion's cohort will not be alive by the end of the book.

Silver Shark by Ilona Andrews

Part of an elite group that works (and sometimes kills) by hopping onto a biological computer network and then romping around Hackers style, Claire Shannon knows that she is a powerful psycher. It surprises her that her side loses the war but doesn't surprise her that the man next in line above her kills her team and tries to kill her as well. Now she is part of the refugee group sent to a new planet that is vividly colorful and filled with kind people, she is understandably shaken to be sent to the company owned by Venturo Escana, the one place where her skill might be uncovered.
For his part, Venturo is delighted to have someone climb the ranks so quickly that she becomes an indispensable right-hand. Too bad she works for him. And that he is so intrigued by the woman that he's met online.
Like the first book in this series, there are great leaps in time and gaps in the story but it is still worth reading. We see a woman who knows her own worth but is just trying to survive but who grows to care about other people as well.

A Letter to Three Witches by Elizabeth Bass

I do love reading a book about a close-knit family and Gwen Engle and her two cousins, Trudy and Milo, would certainly qualify. Their family is well-known in the witching community because of a great-great-grandfather who created a magical catastrophe that affected most of the United States. Because of his work, the whole family is forbidden from practicing magic for 150 years. Gwen's parents have always warned her and her cousin Tannith about the Watchers who might be keeping an eye on their family. Tannith was a distant cousin who was housed with Gwen's family since they were both young but she was never actually adopted. And my least favorite part of this book is the way that Gwen feels about Tannith, seemingly rejecting her for no reason. And that feeling was never really resolved for me. Other than that, I really enjoyed seeing Gwen and her family trying to NOT do magic but it keeps slipping out anyway. I have a feeling that, given another book in the series, the world-building will even out a bit as some things felt left undone but those were fairly minor but having some of the chapters being from the point of view of Tannith's familiar was really fun.

Silent Blade by Ilona Andrews

This is a very short story with a lot of gaping holes and yet the Andrews pair makes it work. I can see why other people say this is one of their weaker series but it's like the authors sort of decided to just leave out wide swathes of the story in these books. But it is Andrews and thus still worth reading.
Meli Glades is an assassin. On a planet, in a world, where there are people with enhanced powers, she is one of the very few that has innate powers. Except that Meli is doing one last job and then retiring. And that job is finished in the first chapter of the book. But her family has pulled her back in for another kill, one that would be more personal since it is the man she was once engaged to but who rejected her before they even truly met.
Celino Carvana meets a mysterious woman who makes him fall in love over the course of a few days. But then she disappears and he discovers that she was closer than he ever knew...

Lightning in a Mirror by Jayne Ann Krentz

For the other books in this series, the Rancourt family has been set up as a former Big Bad. But in this book, Harlan Rancourt returns and appears to be on the side of angels. Or at least the same side as Olivia Le Clair.
Olivia is an investigator and an aura talent. She's not the oracle Harlan believes he needs. but he promises her a chance to solve her mother's murder.
The resulting investigation will include characters that we've seen from other books but not to the point of making it confusing to new readers. Regular readers will finally find out the secret to the camera in Swan's antique shop that has been teased in previous books and Olivia will find a man who is willing to walk through hell to find her.

Wings and Broken Things by Trixie Silvertale

Sigh. I wasn't sure of this series but I've kept reading and I'll give it another shot but... Mitzy is an idiot. I'm not sure how she's actually solving these cases when she is an idiot. She literally pays off a character to suppress evidence. Really? And the author has many characters warning Mitzy away from Bombay and yet she still persists on the "well, he's always treated me okay" theory. This is not a valid theory if you have many different people telling you for different reasons. Yes, she's young but... ugh. I did round this up to three stars because it was an okay book outside of my disgust with the main character and I am going to give the next book a shot (mostly because I've already borrowed it so, what the heck) but this was really a two and a half star book for me. There are two mysteries -- a local thief and discovering who hit the local veterinarian -- but neither ends up being high stakes (or fairly clued) and the vet is ridiculously Pollyanna about the situation.

Witch Trial by Cate Conte

Violet Mooney is still trying to figure out her new life. Her mother (and a half-sister!) are newly back in her life as is the knowledge that she is a hereditary witch. Part of that discovery is that Violet is taking over her grandmother's chair on the Magickal council.
Since Violet is so new, her mother wants her to have an advisor. Enter Blake Alexander, new legal council for the Council. Also a major hottie. He wants to lead Violet through the ways and means of her new community but she isn't sure why she needs someone to do something she can figure out on her own. And is he really trustworthy with his family background?
The story of a reporter genied in the first book continues in this one. This book also ends rather abruptly. An interesting series but there is so much going on it is hard to keep track of everyone and everything. We learn a little bit more about the magical world this series is set in and a little bit more about the people but it is a slow drip. I have a feeling this series would be better if you could read the books all at once.

Valley of Silence by Nora Roberts

The last in the trilogy, we are reading about the virgin queen and the vampire. There is a lot more sturm and drang than I enjoy in a romance but I did like that Moira knew her own mind and took her future into her own hands and I actually did enjoy the battle scenes even though I don't usually enjoy books about vampires.
It is time for the final stand down. If Moira can't win this battle, she will lose for not only her people, but humanity in all the other worlds as well. She knows that she owes it to her people to fight, to be their queen but she wants to take a moment for herself. Or several.

Dance of the Gods by Nora Roberts

The second in a trilogy about <shudder> vampires, this book has the warrior (Blair) and the shapeshifter, Larkin, (two of the six destined to defeat Lilith) hooking up. Blair is a demon-hunter from modern day New York, trained to kill vampires. Larkin is part of the royal family of Geall, a not-as-mythical-as-thought realm that is to be the battleground between humans and vampires. An evil queen named Lilian is trying to take over the world and thought that Geall would be a grand place to start. The gods decided that they needed to put a team together to stop her and this book is the mid-point of their training, when they have to convince the people of Geall that vampires exist and that the people need to be prepared to fight.
We also get Larkin, who grew up in a happy home and is still pretty heart-whole, falling for Blair, who was never loved by her father and then dumped by her fiancé because of her demon hunting. It will take some work to get the two of them together, especially while planning for war.
I remembered this as my least favorite book in the series but on re-read, actually came ahead of the third book (too much sturm and drang) whereas these two, for the most part, see what they want and take it.

Morrigan's Cross by Nora Roberts

Vampires. This series has vampires. Not my favorite Roberts series but still by her so they're pretty good. In this trilogy, a circle of six, the one who is dead, the witch, the sorcerer, the shapeshifter, the scholar and the warrior, must form in order to stop the evil Lilian from turning the world into vampires. Of course, since this is a Nora Roberts book, the six start pairing up. This book highlights the love of modern day witch, Glenna, and twelfth-century sorcerer, Hoyt. We learn the beginning of the circle when Hoyt watches his twin brother Cian be "turned" by Lilith. He is then instructed by the goddess Morrigan to go to modern day New York to begin gathering the circle. Hoyt finds his brother immediately. Cian has used the past 900 years to build an empire including a nightclub where Glenna is drawn to Hoyt. Once Glenna and Hoyt convince Cian that he is a necessary part of the group, they, along with Cian's friend King, fly to Ireland where they are joined by two more people, these from the thought-to-be-mythical land of Geall. The six must learn to fight, even through heartache, in order to even begin to learn how they might be able to take down Lilith.
This book didn't get too dated because much of the action is in another realm. With being the first book and having a LOT of world building to do, Hoyt and Glenna's romance takes a bit of a back seat but this is overall a nice enough story to start a series.

Charms & Witchdemeanors by Amanda M. Lee

Once again, it's something in Aunt Tillie's past that is coming to haunt Bay Winchester. This time, Patty Grimes has been poisoned and Mrs. Little has called in the FBI. Normally, that would be fine because Bay would get to see her boyfriend, Landon, but this time a new FBI agent, Noah Grimes, is sent as well. And Noah seems bound and determined to put Tillie behind bars.
Unfortunately, that means that Bay and her cousins are going to have to prove Tillie's innocence. That becomes a problem when more of Mrs. Little's friends start dying.
An interesting story, this one involves Edith, the ghost from the newspaper office. Did all of the pieces fit together neatly? Maybe, maybe not but this is a fun series and they don't really need to in order to enjoy the books.

American Witch by Thea Harrison, narrator Sophie Eastlake

There have been weird things happening to Molly Sullivan for months. And it culminates on the night that she is putting together a party for her husband and finds another woman's panties in her bed. In her bed. First, she runs away, but then she confronts her husband in front of all of his business associates, including the new DA (her husband is a lawyer), and then she hightails it out of there taking clothes, jewelry, and everything in their shared safe.
In the safety of a hotel, she discovers papers that show that not all of her husband's dealings were above board. She is also shocked to discover that the new DA, Josiah Riverdale, has followed her to the hotel. And he says that she is a powerful witch.
While Molly is at first skeptical, she starts to realize that the past few months have all been pointing her in this direction. And that this opening to her own power coincides with a time when she might need it most.
The late middle got a little mushy with a lot of time skips but I overall really did enjoy this book. Sophie Eastlake, the narrator was top notch as well and I'm looking forward to the next one in the series. Read about this on Dear Author.

Grave Reservations by Cherie Priest

Leda Foley has sort of always considered herself sort of a minor psychic. She gets flashes but they are mainly small things like preventing someone from spilling a coffee. Heck, she doesn't even have any information about her fiance's death three years ago. But then she gets a big flash and, in the course of her job as a travel agent, reroutes an LA detective off of a plane that blows up on the tarmac. It's a good thing that she's been slowly building her psychic muscles by holding objects for people and then picking a karaoke song because she's going to need all the skill she can get in order to help the detective solve a cold case. A cold case that might help her find some closure for herself.
The connection between the two cases was a bit tenuous and there were a lot of people introduced in the story but I liked that Leda actually acted like she had some brains and didn't rush into dangerous situations like is so common for amateur detectives in contemporary novels. A bit quirky but fairly fun.

Then, later, when Ana is picking up a dress from Aurelia, she sees a green light and suddenly the dress shop explodes. Some plot holes but a fast, fun, and fluffy book.

Riley Thorn and the Corpse in the Closet by Lucy Score

The summer heat can sometimes cause people to go a little crazy. Since Riley Thorn had to deal with a bunch of crazy in the first book, she'd really rather have some normal. However. Her grandmother, who no one actually likes, is in town to conduct a psychic boot camp that will enhance the skills of ... well, everyone but mainly Riley, her sister, and her guardian/teacher/friend/angel(?) Gabriel. Mostly it seems like she's there to suck out any joy and fun in Riley and her family's life.
Her housemates are all still alive (they're mostly very old) and crazy. Her boyfriend is being scarily overprotective after Riley got shot in the last book (maybe justified but still not okay to track her without asking.)
Into all of this come two clients -- one is looking for her ex-husband and one wants to know who killed his wannabe-You-Tube-star wife.
Once again fast, fun, and fluffy, the crazy train threatens to go off the rails but mostly was an enjoyable book.

Life's a Witch by Amanda M. Lee

As usual, there's a lot going on in Bay Winchester's world. First, her great aunt Tillie's sister is in town stirring up trouble. There's always been bad blood between the two and time doesn't seem to have diminished their animosity toward each other. Bay and her cousins are doing all they can to avoid their family and all of the fighting.
Getting out of the house is easier when there's a dead body and the local sheriff and the FBI (well, Bay's boyfriend, Landon) are asking Bay for help. The body is that of a local teen who leaves behind a mother and sister. His sister seems especially miffed at him.
As usual, there are some shortcuts in this story and things that don't necessarily make sense but still a fun story and regular readers will enjoy.

What the Hex by Alexis Daria

It's been five years since Catalina Cartagena left Isla Bruja. She was a clothing bewitching whiz and burned out early. She's been in New York and hasn't used her magic since then. Now she's back for her oldest sister's wedding. But something is amiss on the magical island and the only other person who seems to realize that something is wrong is Diego Paz, Cat's high school nemesis and brother of the groom. Not wanting to alarm anyone over the fact that the groom seems possessed, Cat and Diego work together to make sure that their respective families' power isn't overtaken and they don't have niblings that are literal demon spawn.
A short story but richly woven. Alexis Daria creates a magic world with deft strokes and minimal description. The characters have a depth that is surprising in such a short story. My only complaint is really how short it is. With Daria's skill, this would have been an amazing full-length novel. I really hope this isn't the only book set in this world.

Be My Ghost by Carol J. Perry

Maureen Doherty is reeling from the fact that her job at a clothing department store is gone now that the store is out of business. She's not sure what she's going to do and is grateful that her boss gives her a last check and a lucky coin that falls out of her desk drawer as she's leaving. When she gets home, she discovers that she's inherited an in in Haven, Florida, a place she only visited once. What is she to do except pack up her belongings and her beloved golden retriever, Finn and head on down?
When she gets to Haven House Inn, she's surprised to discover that not only does she have a full staff, there are also some year-round residents in addition to the short stays and also some... well, some not so alive guests. Including one who was alive only a little while earlier.
This is a really fun start to a new series (I think) with not too much world building but enough to make it understandable and relatable. Do we know why there are ghosts in the hotel? Maybe not but it's not a necessary part of the story so why add it in? The ghosts didn't add much to the actual mystery other than the fact that the man who was killed was a ghost hunter who may or may not have figured out how to capture the ghosts on film but I think that may be added in to later books in the series.
