A Super Scary Narwhalloween by Ben Clanton

Narwhal loves Halloween but Jelly isn't so sure. There are a lot of scary costumes and he's just not on board. But when word comes that there's a terrifying monster and it might have gotten Narwhal, Jelly is ready to come to the rescue. He superfies himself and their friends and sets out to save his friend.
Adorable as always but could have been a little longer.

Narwhalicorn and Jelly by Ben Clanton

Narwhals have been called the unicorn of the sea but, according to one of our favorite main characters, unicorns are the narwhals of the land. When Jelly wonders what they look like, Narwhal wishes upon a star to become a unicorn and then to go visit with all of the other "*corns." However, while Narwhal is having fun, Jelly just wants to go to bed. So, a little lesson is a little shoehorned in about considering the feelings of others but this was, as always, a fun and joyful book.

Penny, the Engineering Tail of the Fourth Pig by Kimberly Derting and Shelli R. Johannes

When Penny's three brothers are having to deal with a big bully, Penny comes to the rescue. A trained engineer, she knows how to take charge and build well. The next time Wolfgang comes around, he's in for a big surprise.
The authors leaned a little too much into the puns, especially since a lot of them came out in the last part of the book.

Narwhal's School of Awesomeness by Ben Clanton

This book is amazing, awesome, entertaining, and educational. Narwhal and Jelly come upon a school of fish who are on their way to school. Unfortunately, their teacher is sick. But Narwhal steps in to teach (wearing sunglasses because teachers are cool) and Jelly serves as the teacher to the teacher since Narwhal doesn't actually know how to teach. There is a lot of knowledge imparted in this short book including the names of different groups of animals, some math, and lots of synonyms.
Clanton's N&J books are always fun but this one made me giggle out loud. Every page is perfection.

Hello, Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle by Betty MacDonald

I love the Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle stories. She is wise and kind and always helps kids and parents in inventive
ways. Kid's a show-off? Make it so that he turns invisible so no one watches him. Got a crybaby? Tears that will flood a house.
This one is good but a little more preachy than the others in the series.

Gribblebob's Book of Unpleasant Goblins by David Ashby

A sister and brother realize there is a world beyond the veil when a series of events leads to Nils accidentally having a book insert itself into his body. The book belongs to Robert Gribble, a disguised goblin who is also known as Gribblebob. The goblin is at first irate but then realizes that Anna and Nils might be able to help in the fight against the queen of nightmares.
A little twee but I think readers will enjoy. The world building was quite lovely with snatches of fairly tales which create a base but then adding some other magical touches here and there. This book definitely seems like the start of a series as there is more magic hinted at that we don't necessarily see on page (e.g. the boy whose writings come to life) but it's not overwhelming. The story does build slowly and end fairly quickly but overall a nice start to a series.

Happy Narwhalidays by Ben Clanton

Narwhal and Jelly books are always a little off-kilter but full of fun. And this book is joyous as usual. A little too short and somewhat less developed than usual but still fun.
It’s Christmas-time under the sea though that’s not exactly what it’s called. Again, mixing a fun story with some science facts, Clinton introduces the idea of the Merry Mermicorn who brings gifts to the underwater sea creatures. When a gift is left for Jelly that is just perfect, he knows that he will need to come up with something fantastic for Narwhal as well.

Poesy the Monster Slayer by Cory Doctorow

Poesy the Monster Slayer by Cory DoctorowThe pictures in this book are absolutely amazing. The story was a three (basically a hyperactive child keeps her parents awake -- I think it's trying to empower kids to take care of their own monsters but the story doesn't hang together well - would be better with maybe 5 more pages that show more about how Poesy preps) but the pictures are a 5. Brilliantly colored the pictures only enhance and lift the words to a better story.

Love by Matt de la Pena, Loren Long

The description of this book on the 2018 NPR Book Concierge is pretty darn close. There aren't a "zillion" ways depicted to show love but there are many and (almost) all of them are lovely. All of the pictures are absolutely amazing though.

Sharon, Lois and Bram's Skinnamarink by Sharon Hampson; Lois Lilienstein; Bram Morrison

I think there are a lot of people in my age group that will remember Sharon, Lois, and Bram from their television show. Now, their iconic song is in a children's book. The illustrations were perfect for the kind of fun and inclusive show. There was a sense of humor. There were also a couple of verses I didn't know. But I have had that song in my head all day now...

Anytime Yoga by Ulrika Dezé

Anytime Yoga by Ulrika DezeThis is a "fine" book but I did not connect with it and am not sure children would either. The monkey could be fun but isn't well utilized. Most of this book feels like an 1800s grammar book teaching the itsy-bitsy chidwen how to do their yo-ga. Less conversational than teachy.

The Case of the Missing Hippo by Laura James

Oh, how I wish that the illustrations had been included in the ARC I got from NetGalley. The story was fine but I think the pictures might have upped my rating.
The Case of the Missing Hippo by Laura James
Violet, the niece of a local hotel owner, is trying to get the hotel some more business by holding a talent show. One of the judges catches a bad cold so Fabio is asked to step in. During the tryouts, the lights go out and a hippo singer disappears. Fabio is immediately on the case. It takes a race at the nearby athletic event to put him on the right track.
This book will probably amuse parents with the arch jokes and wink, winks but I'm not sure how it will appeal to children.

Narwhal's Otter Friend by Ben Clanton

Narwhal's Otter Friend (A Narwhal and Jelly Book #4)I adore the Narwhal and Jelly stories and this is no different.  A new creature come into the life of the two friends and captivates Narehal's attention. Otter even seems to like waffles as much as Narwhal. Jelly begins to feel a bit left out and tries to find a new best friend but it is hard work.
Another lovely addition to the series. I didn't love the inset story and wish this had been longer but otherwise a great read.
