Cocoa Curses by Erin Johnson

This is a cozy mystery that has a conceit (being near Santa's workshop) and it runs with it. Of course, it assumes that there are witches that live near by and Rudie Hollybrook is one of them. She has always felt a little bit like an outsider as her magic has to do with death. And that comes into play when a woman is murdered. One who Rudie didn't particularly like, nor did the woman like her. So having her ghost around isn't exactly a fun time.

However, the way to get rid of the ghost would be to solve the murder. Rudie isn't exactly a detective so there is some bumbling. There is also the inevitable love interest, in this case a journalist.

Murder on Milverton Square by G.B. Ralph

I can't remember why I picked this book up but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. There wacere some parts where my suspension of disbelief was stretched a bit thin but I am definitely looking forward to the second book in the series as I really enjoyed Addison's character development. 

Addison Harper's uncle has died and left Addison something in the will. Summoned to Milverton by a rather abrupt lawyer, he at first enjoys the adventure. He's astonished to find out he'as inherited quite a large estate including Milverton Manor which looks like it hasn't been redecorated since the 60s. It's just too darn bad that the best-looking guy in town happens to be Sergeant Jake Murphy who is investigating Addison in the death of the aforementioned lawyer. 

Of course, as mysteries are wont to do, this book has the lawyer as a villainous sort who has made a number of people in town angry so the mystery is slow going in the solving department.

My Name is Barbra by Barbra Streisand

48 hours of listening. 48. hours. It was a very interesting read and really inclusive of all of Streisand's work which, as most of us know, is extensive. I did finish the whole book before it needed to be returned to the library but it did start to drag a bit. In an effort to include everyone she worked with, Streisand name drops everyone. Ev. Er. Y. One. So many names. A really interesting look at her life from her side and most of the stories, especially those that set her up to look like a high strung diva are shown to have been untrue. Like so many women, she was vilified to make others look good.

Wisteria Wyverns by Angela Pepper

In the last book, Zara's father returned. It was a surprise because he had generally been an absentee father. A the end of the book, someone else from her past had returned. Her mother. The one who was dead. 

This book gives Zara a chance to get to know her mother again. They're going to be spending a lot of time together in the castle in the next town over because, as they are sitting there, a new ghost enters Zara's body. It's someone that we know if you've been reading the series. Dead body means nobody gets to leave for a while so Zara's going to be spending time with her mother.

Throw in a man who looks just like her neighbor and has the ability to disappear, a wyvern named Ribbons who can communicate with Zara telepathically, and the water district team and you've got another screwball mystery. Not very deep but a fast, fun, and fluffy read.

Sorry I'm Late, I Didn't Want to Come by Jessica Pan

I had a friend recommend this book to me and I thought it sounded like me. Same first name, same nature? Yes, let's do this thing. It was an okay book but reminded me like The Year of Yes and several other books where the author steps out of their comfort for a year and chronicles the journey. Pan didn't end up with a husband like Rhimes (she already had one) but it was still an entertaining read about one introvert's search for how to be more extroverted including improv classes, hosting events (her point about introverts hosting really resonated, you don't have to interact when you are busy being a hostess), and going on a  surprise trip while trying to make friends.

Heartwishes Edilean by Jude Deveraux

Seriously, what is it with normally good romance authors deciding that it's perfectly okay to write sex scenes without condoms? Would have been a four star book if the characters had decided that they loved each other enough to protect each other rather than just fall into bed because Gemma is on the pill?

Otherwise, really liked her character (hiring a historian instead of an archivist to organize your family papers aside). Devereaux often writes about physically strong women and Gemma is one of them. She isn't necessarily beautiful but she certainly captures the attention of Colin Frazier, a descendant of one of the seven founding families of Edilean. He's super rich (like all good romance heroes?) but works as the local sheriff, and oh, he's a Pied Piper with children.

It might seem a little too good to be true but they'll have to deal with Colin's not-so-ex-girlfriend, many small emergencies, a magical wishing stone, and even an international thief.

Spy x Family: Family Portrait by Aya Yajima

Okay, I did not realize that this was a novelization and got so thrown off. It took a while to get into the book but, once I did, I settled in to the familiar characters. I don't think there was enough character building for a person who hasn't read the comics to jump in but I could be wrong.

In the first story, Anya is going camping. The good news is that Damian, the boy her adopted father would like her to make friends with, is going too. And they are put on the same team. Of course, there is bad news and Anya gets the two of them lost during a storm.

The second story has Yor's brother Yuri finally taking a day off. He hopes to spend it with Yor but she has to work also. Instead, he ends up taking care of Anya for the day, taking her to a place where children can pretend to different jobs. Yuri has to get involved as well and maybe gets a little too invovled. 

Franky learns about love in the third story. He is beating himself up for not having a girlfriend and feeling jealous of Loid's good looks. Then he hears a young woman singing and meets a beautiful nineteen-year-old. She's blind but part of a musical family so is practicing her music. Franky spends time with her and begins to get even closer to Franky. When Franky hears she's about to have eye surgery, he reacts about how you'd expect. 

The final story has Loid and Yor playing in the park with Bond and Anya when a young man offers to paint them. While Loid is suspicious, he is backed into agreeing to the painting when the artist offers Anya his bag. The artist turns out to be Felix Curtis who is very well known. As a professional spy and an assassin, neither Loid nor Yor can have their faces anywhere in public in case they are recognized. But how can they get out of this painting without acting suspicious?

One final short story rounds out the bunch. Two servers are talking about their dating lives. Their discussion veers to the families they see in the restaurant. One happy family they admire is our very own Forgers.

Starlit Winter Nights by Nora Roberts

I hadn't read the Cordina series in awhile and this book reminded me of why. This series didn't age well and this book is definitely a product of its time with Hanna supposedly being a kickass secret undercover agent (we learn this pretty quickly) but she is helpless against Prince Bennett and his ... charms(?).

Bennett is worried about his family. An old enemy is about to be released from from prison and he knows that his family is going to be a target. He is even more worried about the fact that he seems to be falling for a woman who is not his normal type. He usually dates models and striking women but this one is... not. but she's captured his attention.

Lady Hannah Rothchild is drab and tends to be overlooked. That is because she has cultivated that personality. It allows her to melt into the background becoming the perfect bodyguard for people like Princess Eve. She has the background and she has the skills. Hannah is about to take down the Big Bad but is apparently distracted by Bennett and his forceful (emphasis on force...) ways.

Magic, Lies, and Deadly Pies by Misha Popp

I had read the second book in this series and for about forty percent of this book, I wondered whether I really needed to read this one (I didn't). But then, what made me enjoy the second book finally kicked in. I really like the narrator of this story, Daisy Ellery, who kills men but does so by a certain set of rules (usually.) 

We know that she makes pies and can imbue a little bit of magic. That magic, in a similar vein to "Like Water for Chocolate", can imbue different feelings in people. It can also kill. And she is trying to rid the world of men who don't treat women well. To that end, she has set up a business, "Pies before Guys," that works solely on referrals. Daisy will take care of the men in your life who you need not to be in your life. But she has someone who is not her normal client. It is someone who is closer to her than she ever would have guessed.

For as close as some people are to her in the second book, I don't see those relationships really building in this book but it was a good intro to a series.

We finally get to meet the elusive Caroline, the woman who done Stoker wrong. And with his best friend. Whom she then married. Who is now missing. Who is accused of stealing a valuable diadem from an Egyptian dig site. And Stoker and Veronica have been asked to investigate. Of course, Veronica is ready to charge toward danger and drag Stoker behind with her.

A lovely addition to the series. We get a great peek into Stoker's past and a bit of an explanation as to how his character has been built.

This Spells Love by Kate Robb

I would love more romance stories where a guy and a girl could just be friends. No love or romance or simmering feelings, just friends. This is not that book. And I knew that going in but was still somehow disappointed because Gemma was so happy to have Dax as her friend. Their story was a good one, with a spell from a book and some magical hand waving having Gemma going back in time to not having dated the man who just broke her heart (or at least bruised her pride.) But that means that she and Dax never met. And, while it seems perfect at first, Gemma finds out toward the end that pulling on one thread might change the tapestry. And she has to make some decisions about what is going to be best not only for her, but for Dax as well.

The Woman in Me by Britney Spears

For those of us who have seen Britney's Instagram, we can tell that this book has been heavily (HEAVILY) edited. Or the ghostwriter was really good at pulling together a coherent narrative from fractured stories. But it is an interesting glimpse into the life of a woman who, the world is slowly discovering, was done wrong by almost everyone around her. While she may not be completely on her feet, that is probably not completely her fault and what happened to her is given context by what was going on in her own mind versus the narrative being built by people who only wanted to make money off of her. We get stories from Star Search, the Mickey Mouse Club years, her marriages, some of her dating life, and her time being pregnant. Getting to see behind the curtain makes her so much more relatable.

The Boyfriend Candidate by Ashley Winstead

It's a shame that the biggest stretch of my imagination that there was more than one librarian in the school that Alexis worked in because that shouldn't be the world we live in. Also, that a Democrat could get close to winning in Texas. But the man that Alexis tries to have a one night stand with turns out to be a man in politics. 

Logan knows that he needs to have a squeaky clean image to be able to have a chance to beat the incumbent. Having a picture taken of him and Alexis leaving a hotel is not part of the plan. But when fake dating gets put on the table, he is shocked that she says yes.

This was an okay book but more politics than I expected and so much that could have been solved with some communication.

A Botanist's Guide to Flowers and Fatality by Kate Khavari

Ugh. This book introduced one of my least favorite tropes: the love triangle. Saffron Everleigh didn't really make any promises to Alexander Ashton before he headed out to the Amazon, so should she really feel guilty for kissing Dr. Michael Lee in the course of an investigation? The man who supports her in her investigation of the deaths of three women, all of whom were sent bouquets of flowers that had messages. And often caused itching and more.

This time, Detective Inspector Green actually asks for her help. And Saffron wants to help. She may be in over her head though. Going undercover in the ton, it may be that her true identity will be exposed and the way of life she has chosen for herself will be threatened.

A Killer in the Family by Gytha Lodge

I didn't realize this book was part of a series when I picked it up based on the cover. The story was intriguing, a woman puts her DNA into an ancestry site looking for her lost family. Suddenly, she is linked as one person away from a murderer. It is her father, her son, or her brother that is killing woman and then burning their bodies. Aisling Cooley has been a single mom and is generally proud of her two boys. But what does the evidence mean when her father has been gone for decades and she has no siblings?

This book was a little too twist and turny for me but might have been more enjoyable had I read more in the series (though I didn't feel I needed to have done so.)

Yvonne Goes to York by Marion Chesney

The last book in this series isn't as crazy as some of the other books but it does finally wrap up the overarching love story of the former housekeeper, Miss Hannah Pym and Sir George. We also get to see what happened to Hannah's former employer who ran off with a footman. 

True to form for these stories, Hannah is boarding a stagecoach. This time, she is heading to York. Also on the coach are a lovely young Frenchwoman (Yvonne), a nobleman who says he is doing it because he is out of funds (the Marquis of Ware), and a Frenchman who is after Yvonne in order to get to her father.

A satisfying end to the series and Sir George not only finds out that Hannah has been telling the truth about her adventures, he gets to join in.

If you had the chance to go back to major life moments and make different choices, would you do it? Lolly Blanchard is about to make that exact choice. Her aunt has the answer. Three lemon drops that, taken before she goes to bed, will let her live her life in an alternate version of her life. Lolly is skeptical... until the first night has her waking up overseas, in charge of the restaurant that she had always hoped for.

A little sappy in points but a cute read and a life lesson in how you really can shape your own decisions.

I requested this book from the library based on the title and the cover. It is a short story and fast read about a young woman from America who is studying in England. She has been invited to the home of a friend... a friend-ish type and she is writing about it in her diary. Through her eyes, we get to know Emma's family, especially her twin brother Adam. But, even though Emma's family is wealthy, it is not all sunshine and roses. And our diary writer may or may not make it out of the book alive.

Murder on Black Swan Lane by Andrea Penrose

A. J. Quill is well-known for the cartoons that lambaste various people in high places. The Earl of Wrexford wants to know how Quill knows so much about his life. Especially when Wrexford is implicated in the death of the Reverend Josiah Holworthy.

Charlotte Sloane has any number of secrets to hide (not all of which are revealed in this story). And there are two young boys she is trying to protect. Wrexford, and his search for Quill threatens to upend all of that. But the two will have to work together in order to figure out why Holworthy was killed and why that connection leads back to Charlotte.

I am pretty sure I started and abandoned this book once before. It is a little overwrought in places but ended up being an interesting story.

Not That Fancy by Reba McEntire

Reba McEntire has had a fantastic life. Singing, TV shows, movies, Broadway... the woman does it all and she shares some of that with her readers. The stories aren't particularly deep but they are entertaining. We get to see teh highs of her life as well as the lows. There's not a lot about her personal life, it's mostly about the professional but what is included is all positive. Definitely worth a listen.

Setting the Table by Danny Meyer

I had had this book recommended to me in a couple of different ways and had one copy which I gave away and then another that sat on my TBR for a few years. Finally, I picked it up and realized why people were recommending this book. It did take awhile because this book was more memoir than I realized and I thought it was more about business. It does get there but it is woven in. What finally hooked me was a quote on page 65, "Service is a monologue... Hospitality is a dialogue." 

Meyer gives some other great ideas like looking for an employee that is a 51 percenter - someone whose skills re 51% emotional hospitality and 49% technical excellence. These people have five core skills that he divides out as optimistic warmth, a thirst for learning, a natural tendency to work as well as it can be done, a connection to how other people feel, and an understanding of what makes people tick. On that last one he also tacks on a natural inclination to do the right thing. 

Meyer talks about the the many people who have helped him develop his restaurants as well as his philosophy. One bit that he took from a mentor, Erika Andersen, is that people would far rather be heard than agreed with.

There is a lovely section on traits that his team looked for when hiring managers. There are nine in total and I think I'm going to be trying to hit at least one of these every week until the rest of the year:  infectious attitude, self-awareness, charitable assumption (assume the best), long-term view of success, sense of abundance, trust, approving patience and tough love, not feeling threatened by others, and character. 

The last thing that really resonated with me were the five As for effectively addressing mistakes. I've seen them in various aspects but not necessarily all in one place. He talks about awareness (knowing that the mistake happened), acknowledgement (letting people know that you have had mistakes), apology (in the AHLEI GSG, this is 'Recovery'), action (fixing it if possible; letting people know what you are doing), and additional generosity (extra action if people have been good sports).

Starter Villain by John Scalzi

I heard about this book on a podcast and thought it sounded interesting. And it was. The whole story revolves around one man who finds himself thrust into the role of a villain. Formerly a journalist and now a substitute teacher, Charlie is divorced and living with his cat. Cats now that he's found another one. But his life is upended when his uncle dies. Charlie didn't know much about the man so he is absolutely shocked by the flowers at the funeral home celebrating his death and the man who comes to stab the dead body. When Charlie goes home, he only barely avoids being blown up in a fire that destroys his entire house. 

Suddenly, Charlie is thrust into a world with literal life-or-death stakes. He also has to deal with dolphins that not only talk, they're unionizing. Oh, and the cats are intelligent as well. In fact, they're management. And they've been watching Charlie.

A different take on the role of villains and it took some time to get on board but I quite enjoyed it in the end.

The Monsters We Defy by Leslye Penelope

The title and cover of this book were very intriguing. And a description that makes this sound like "Leverage" but set in the 1920s with some fantasy aspects? Yes, please.

Clara Johnson is pretty well-known around some neighborhoods in 1920s New York. She can talk to people on the other side and help make deals for those in our realm. But something strange is happening in this world. People are not quite themselves and they are disappearing. This may or may not be connected to a ring that a powerful entity would like Clara to steal. It may mean that she no longer has to carry a debt to this entity. But she is not the only person trying to get the ring and she may have to work with others, including a handsome, enhanced musician; a former circus freak; a man who wears many faces; and a man who can change memories.

I really enjoyed this story though some parts didn't quite make sense but I really look forward to Penelope's next book.

Rest You Merry by Charlotte MacLeod

Professor Peter Shandy is fed up. His best friend's wife has been bullying him for years to take part in the campus "Illumination." But he's resisted. Until this year. This is the year he hires a company to make the most obnoxious Christmas display, complete with music. Then he locks his electricity box and leaves on a cruise. When he gets back, he expects that Jemima (the friend's wife) will cuss him out but good. What he doesn't expect -- The electricity to his house has been turned off and Jemima is dead behind his couch.

But Professor Shandy is the only one that seems to think this was anything more than an accident. So, can he solve the murder before more people get killed? No. No he can't. But it's a fun story and a great holiday read.

The Art of Chit Chat by Luigi Padovesi

I tend toward introversion so I like reading books about how to make conversations. This was... okay, I guess. I'm not sure that this was written by a human and not just some AI prompt. It certainly wasn't edited (which, I did read an ARC but still). Lots of repetition. LOTS of repetition. This 71 page book might have been closer to 60 if it had been vetted and rearranged.

You'll have to work hard to find the good points though they do exist.

Deborah Goes to Dover by Marion Chesney

Miss Pym was somewhat disappointed by love in the last book. But she is going to continue her travels. And this particular trip is going to lead her to a fight. One that her footman, Benjamin, is taking part in. But it is this fight that introduces her to Lady Deborah Western. Deborah has grown up with her twin brother and she is more comfortable in pants than in a dress. But her time acting as a man may be coming to an end as she is now nineteen and other people, including their neighbor the Earl of Ashton, are starting to take notice of her as a woman. 

An old enemy pops up in this book but is summarily taken care of. 

An okay addition to the series but I (and I think Chesney) are ready for that last book in the series.

In the Company of Witches by Auralee Wallace

Brynn Warren was raised by her two aunts (and hypothetically an uncle though he doesn't factor into a lot of this story.) Her family has been living in their town, Evenfall, for over 400 years. In all of that time, the Warrens have been very quietly helping the town using their magic. But Brynn has a secret. Ever since her husband died, her magic hasn't been quite the same. She just doesn't know how to talk to her aunts about it. 

Right now, she's just hoping they can make it through the current guest at their B&B. Constance is a menace with a bell. Brynn's aunt Izzy seems to be doing okay but her aunt Nora is another story. In fact, Nora is discussing ways that she could kill Constance when she is discovered dead. And it ends up that Nora is now going to be a main suspect even though Constance's family has some deep levels of hatred for the woman.

This first book in the series is just as much about Brynn coming back to her heritage as it is about solving Constance's death but it was a fun listen and easy to get through.

Too Sexy For Marriage by Cathie Linz

I had all three of these books when they first came out and they traveled with me for quite a while as I moved around during undrgrad and grad school. I remembered them being fast, fun, and fluffy. I did NOT remember the fairy godmothers. If I read this book today, I'm not sure I'd enjoy it as much but there is a lot of nostalgia and I have to admit to skimming the parts with the godmothers. 

Yep, in the late nineties, Linz wrote three books about triplets that also had three fairy godmothers who are supposed to assign them virtues. Except that these three godmothers are new and accidentally give Jason too much common sense and sex appeal. Now grown up, Jason has been declared one of Chicago's sexiest bachelors. 

Heather is a radio host of a program called "Love on the Rocks." One of her more misogynistic cohosts tells her she knows nothing of love and couldn't even hook Jason enough to make him do things that would be out of the norm like inline skating or kissing her at the top of a ferris wheel. Suddenly, money is exchanging hands among Heather's coworkers and she is feeling dragged along.

Will the fairy godmothers be able to help pull these two soulmates together or will they tear themselves apart?

It took me a bit to get into this book as the beginning didn't quite go in line with what I thought the description had said but I got pulled in and zoomed right through.

My Darling Bride by Ilsa Madden-Mills

When she steals a car, Emmaline Darling is just trying to get away from an abusive boyfriend and a man who is coming on too strong. She left the keys on the tire in good faith not realizing someone else might steal the car. So, when Graham Harlan shows up and demands that she marry him in order to even the scales, Emmaline is aghast. It doesn't help that Graham has bought the bookstore where she works. 

Graham is just trying to help his brother. Though he's a famous football star, he doesn't have the money to help his brother open a gym. But he can get a chunk of money when he marries. A near death experience on the football field has made him more aware of his own mortality. A vision he saw while he was dead makes him wonder if Emmaline was pre-ordained.

I liked this book though the story felt a bit forced in places and Graham was not the best. I'm really hoping for a story with Graham's teammate and Emmaline's sister.

Miss Morton And The Spirits Of The Underworld by Catherine Lloyd

Lady Caroline is happy to have left her family behind and work with her employer, Mrs. Frogerton and her daughter Dorothy, in London. She is, however, worried that Mrs. Frogerton is taking her to see a medium. Lady Caroline does NOT believe in psychics. However, this one is different. And she gives Caroline a note that speaks to Caroline's past. But before she can talk to Madam Lavinia, the woman is murdered.

Once again, Dr. Harris is involved. This time, the police are accusing him of murder. Caroline and Mrs. Frogerton are going to help prove his innocence but they have to figure out first why the psychic was killed.

This was a fun little mystery, a lot of fluff and some time that calls for believe suspension but an enjoyable listen.

Spotlight Scandal by Stella Bixby

Ellie is settling into her new town. Not everything is going smoothly but she is happy in Cliff Haven. She's even going to have the last line in the Christmas play! If she can manage to get it out, that is. And if the curse doesn't strike. There was a young lady who died (or was murdered, depending on who you talk to) during a play years ago. And there's one that dies in this one as well. 

With star frenemies in town, there is a lot going on. Not all of it made sense but it was an enjoyable book as Ellie tries to figure out who killed one Hollywood starlet and framed another. This is while dealing with discovering a magical cousin and trying to figure out how to use her magical powers.

Born to Be Badger by Shelly Laurenston

If you are one of the people, like me, who wait with baited breath for anything that Laurenston releases, this book will not disappoint. Full of the same antics, the need to completely turn off your disbelief and just enjoy the ride, and the exclamation points (!), this book pairs up another of Max McKilligan's teammates with one of the Malone brothers. Somewhat rigid Tock (time management is NOT just about being on time) might not initially be thought of with the laid back Shay (he's a tiger shifter who owns dogs) but the two actually work really well together. Tock isn't actually as rigid as she appears, she just prefers to have a schedule. Shay isn't lazy, he just doesn't care about most things. But he appreciates Tock's need to be on time as well as how well her personality meshes with his daughter's. Except for the felonies. But Tock does try really hard to keep that from her. 

There are, of course, also old grudges and new characters that come into this book as well as a lot of killing. A LOT of killing. Especially since Tock's grandmother. But we do finally get to know more about what happened with the Malones' father and you can definitely see the beginning of how Laurenston will be able to wrap up this arc in the last book.

Mrs. Pollifax and the Second Thief by Dorothy Gilman

The book opens with Mrs Pollifax standing in the rain at a funeral. She's been asked to take pictures by her old friend Farrell. The same Farrell who's sent out an SOS asking her and Curtis to come to Sicily. Curtis can't make it but Mrs Pollifax is up for the challenge.

She meets not only Farrell there, but also a young CIA agent named Kate. Kate and her aunt are the ones to hide Mrs. Pollifax and Farrell when they are followed from their meeting spot. There is something interesting going on with Kate's aunt and the village that she supports with her art. Somehow it overlaps with the work that Farrell has been doing, trying to retrieve a supposed signature of Julius Caesar. Oh, and old enemy rears his head once again.

Oh, these books are dated. Terms that were maybe acceptable in the early 80s now cause a twinge. Is this book believable? No. Does it need to be? Also no.

Murder in an Irish Pub by Carlene O'Connor

Siobhan O'Sullivan is working with the rest of the Garda to make sure the town stays safe while a major poker game is going on. There are some very famous players coming in including The Octopus, Eamon Foley (anyone's guess as to whether his nickname refers to his good poker hands or how he acts around women), Clementine Heart, and Shane Ross. 

During the first game, Eamon is dealt the Dead Man's hand. Major foreshadowing there as he later ends up dead but not before he's accused of cheating to win the hand. There was a lot going on with accusations that his wife was carrying a child that wasn't Eamon's, a bet involving a valuable racehorse, and longstanding rivalries. 

The actual answer comes somewhat out of left field. An interesting story and you don't need to have read the rest of the series to understand what it going on.

Scarlet Nights by Jude Deveraux

Jude Deveraux... light fluff, incredibly enjoyable. Sarah Shaw was introduced in the first Edilean story as the neighbor/cousin who was involved with a man nobody liked. In this story, we find out that the man is actually a maniacal con artist and Mike Newland (the brother of another character from the first novel) has been dispatched to the town to entice Sarah away from her fiancee. 

Not to deep, not a lot of character development and the characters fall into bed WAY too fast, but some great dialogue and I just love the wackinesss.

The Pantomime Murders by Fiona Veitch Smith

Clara Vale is asked to look into the sudden disappearance of Sybil Langford. The woman is legendary in pantomime circles and her professionalism is well-known. For her to leave so quickly and in the middle of the season worries her young friend Peggy. Even as Clara is looking into the information, another person dies. 

At the same time, she is hired to help figure out why a local department store is losing so much merchandise. The man who hires for the department store is a familiar name, Jack Danskin. He is eventually brought into the mystery a little bit more and he may become a bigger part of the series as we go on. 

I like this book better than the first ones as we are getting to know the characters more and the mystery came together a bit more smoothly.

Thanksgiving by Sam Sifton

This is a delightful book which, written by the one man turkey helpline for the New York Times, simplifies Thanksgiving for everyone. Whether you've hosted Thanksgiving in the past or this will be your first year, this book is going to help you be ready for the big day. Combining recipes with some of the author's own nostalgia with instructions from before the big day to the end of it, this book is no-nonsense and filled with some rules to break (you can put your for on top of your napkin) and others to definitely follow (NO appetizers.)

Highly enjoyable and definitely worth a read, probably even a re-read.

Inheritance by Nora Roberts

Is it trite to walk in on your fiance having sex with someone else right before the wedding? Yes, but that doesn't mean it's not happening to Sonya. It's just too bad that he takes the breakup badly and that she works with him. So she quits her job and branches out on her own.

Sonya's able to get even a little more space when she finds out that she's inherited a large house from the uncle she never knew she had. It's in Maine and she has to live in it at least 40 weeks for the next three years. Though trepidatious, Sonya's ready to take the leap. It doesn't even take three weeks for her to decide she's going to go for it. It takes a little longer for her to convince her best friend Cleo that she should move there too. 

Roberts is a master and this book just shows it once again. You think you've read books similar to this one -- old ghost angry about life and taking it out on the living; two friends moving to a new place and finding handsome men; playful and adorable dogs. But this book has enough of a twist and some nuances in the characters that make it worth reading to see what happens next.
