Learning and Development Essentials by Albert Singh, Vibrant Publishers

A nice, basic book that is a decent introduction to Learning and Development. It covers things like basic theories of not only learning and development but of learning. It covers some of the tools that you might need if you are developing an L&D program and even touches on data gathering and reporting.

The Cloak and Dagger Club by Jackie McMahon

Lucy Hubbard has been invited to the exclusive Cloak and Dagger club for a meeting. The founder and president, Horace Hazelmoor, himself invited her. She's not sure why. Yes, she had a book published and, yes, it was well reviewed, but why her? Somehting happened at a party that she's still embarrassed about but we don't know what it is at the beginning. Instead, we're treated to a third person look at Horace's mind and the fact that he is planning to use Lucy for nefarious purposes.
But before Horace's grand plan is realized, he is killed. And all of the authors at the club come under suspicion. Especially Frank, with whom Lucy has a past. So she decides to make like Pandora Grey (her fictional detective) and solve a murder.
There's a lot going on in this book with the main focus being on Lucy and Frank but our third person omniscient view swings around to other characters as well.

Book Club Boyfriend by Jenny Holiday

Blaire Kellermoon is still trying to find her footing after her divorce. Both of her children are now out of the house and she's moved back into the home she and her husband had kept even though they had moved into a much larger mansion. She used to be a rom-com actress but lately has been working as a producer. There is one book that she particularly wants to get done, The Green Light, but she's having problems. In the meantime, she's trying to get the rights to a book written by Jack Branksome.
Jack wrote the book when he was much younger. Since then, he's been teaching but he's trying to write another book. He's not much impressed by Blaire and denies her request. Too bad everyone assumed he'd do it and the news had already leaked.
Now he's feeling bad. And shocked that she responds by inviting him to write in her pool house. Even more shocked that he accepts.
The two slowly start to get to know each other an themselves. The book has some weird bits that don't always get explained, but it made me smile a number of times.

What Doesn't Kill You Makes You Hotter by Laura Clery

Clery is a well-known internet personality whose most memorable character is probably Pamela Pumpkin. I didn't know much about her but I've been on a biography kick lately and picked this book up.
I was not expecting to find out about her marriage imploded as her husband spiraled further and further into some sort of madness. We get a deep look into the answer of "why did she stay?", at least her version of it. And it makes sense in that it was very much a case of a frog being boiled. Did she make bad decisions even after her divorce? Yes, she did. She's very up front about that.
This is more a selection of essays than a coherent book which threw me off but I did, ovrall, enjoy her stories and a glimpse into the life of someone who is trying to do the best she can by her children and then for herself.

The Cornish Honeymoon Murder by Fiona Leitch

Fiona and her husband Nate are newly marrired and ready for their honeymoon. Suddenly, they are taking it... along with her mother, daughter, and dog. At least it's a free trip to an almost carbon-neutral resort in one of the Isles of Scilly off Cornwall Why free? Because multi-millionaire owner, Isaac Barnes, believes someone is sabotaging the opening and he wants the help of the woman who solved a murder for him a few years ago.
At first, it seems like a lark. There are a lot of famous people to ogle. The resort is right plush. Unfortunately, the pranks start escalating. And a death is discovered, just as a storm comes bearing down on the island. Nate and Fiona are on a timeline to find out who killed this thoroughly objectionable character before the storm clears up.

Slasher Summer by E. L. Chen

Patrick just wanted to gather his friends for one last summer. The group had come together because of him, The Jumpscare Society. After his sister's murder he needed something and the group had worked, putting on shadow plays of the Slasher movie, filmed right in their home town. Until their senior year when it fell apart. But now, Patrick has pulled them back together for one last night: the druggie, the preppie, the football king and his cheerleader queen, and the goth girl. Everyone except the Final Girl. But Carrie shows up anyway bringing with her a host of unresolved issues. Or maybe they all brought issues. Especially the person who shows up dressed as the Slasher.
A fun take on horror films. The book is third person omniscient from most of the character's viewpoints and uses over half the book to build tension before the killings begin. This is going to be a weird thought but I was thrown off by exactly how perfectly the movie beats were hit in a book. It was like hearing a Queen song sung as a madrigal. It mostly works but feels just a little off. Other than that, a really fun summer read.

The Hidden Staircase by Carolyn Keene

Nancy is trying to relax and read a book but is having trouble concentrating. Luckily, she's interrupted by a knock on the door. Not so luckily, it's Nathan Gombet who is trying to get something from Carson Drew. Her father isn't home but, when he comes back, confirms that Gombet is someone that Nancy should avoid.
Luckily, she has a mystery to distract herself. There are a pair of elderly sisters who are concerned that their house is haunted. Nancy decides to stay at their house so she can experience what they are hearing. And it is certainly puzzling, but she is able to figure out what is happening in the end, leaving the sisters with a happy ending.
This book hasn't aged as well as the first one. I think it was just some of the language that made me realize how old these books are but I'm going to keep working my way through the series.

Ode to the Bones by Carolyn Haines

Sarah Booth Delaney and Tinkie are on the hunt for a missing farmer. Oscar had to foreclose on his family's farm and is now concerned that the young man, Danny, is missing. But is he missing just because he is ashamed to have lost the farm? Or is there something more sinister at work?
The actual mystery didn't take center stage as much as the plight of today's farmers. There are so many factors working against the people who love the land of the south and for more than just development. Yes, there is a developer who is not set up as the Big Bad as much as a general nuisance.
The ending was a bit dramatic but does set us up for the series to continue.

Safari Murder Party by Rachel Moore

As an executive assistant, Fletcher Spence thought she knew her boss. She thought she'd work her way into his magazine as a photographer. But when she's not invited to his ultra-exclusive island getaway, it's the last straw. She's already got an eviction notice and had to divest herself of the boyfriend she's had since she was sixteen. But this is the limit. She decides she's going to show up anyway. And Dyer Cartwright lets her. He lets her join all of the coworkers that look down on her and his son who isn't even working for the business at the moment anyway.
They arrive at the fabulous island and get settled in. But then comes the twist, Dyer dies. And his will reveals that the last person standing will inherit the entire media empire. Chaos erupts.

The Last Lady B by Eloisa James

Every girl dreams of marrying well, especially in the early 1800s. Not every girl would want to marry a man who is seventy years old, older than her father. But not every girl has a sister who also needs to marry and, while both are pretty enough and have a good lineage, their family cannot provide them with a dowry. And Genevieve would like to at least give her sister a chance at love. So she marries Lord Burnsby. And seven months later, she is visiting his hunting lodge in the Highlands. She will meet his heir and the heir's wife. She does not expect Lord Godric, boyhood friend of the heir, nor Lord Burnsby's seemingly mad illegitimate sister, and his daughter. Genevieve certainly doesn't expect to meet Sophonisba, Lord Burnsby's mistress of thirty years. And she certainly doesn't expect to find her own voice and start speaking up. Nor to find love while she's still married.
A Gothic novel in the best sense. I couldn't get past our heroine falling in love while still married but I enjoyed the ghosts, the drama, and, of course, the compulsory madwoman in the attic (although Mima is allowed to roam freely in this book.)

Payback by Elizabeth Rose Quinn

The third person point of view bounces around a bit between many of the main characters so every interactioni is shaded by their own knowledge that they may or may not share with the reader. The view we most often see is that of Cami. She is heading to her weekend jail, called Pay to Stay. Rather than serving a full sentence, wealthy offenders can pay $200/night to do their time on the weekends. We find out that she is taking the fall for her boyfriend and he, in turn, is funding her lifestyle, including her nights at the Pay to Stay.
We also learn more about a woman who is taking the fall for her father who has dementia, one who is a campaign manager, a doctor's wife, one with an emotional support iguana, and a nun. Also in the jail are the guard whose brain we also see (he's someone who craves power and a prisoner who is being transported. One of them ends up dead and the rest are trying to solve the murder.
I enjoyed most of this story and it really felt like "And Then There Were None," but then it went way off the rails and I wasn't expecting that.

Salt, Sweat & Steam by Brigid Washington

Washington opens with the story of her reason for joining the Culinary Institute of America (CIA), Joseph. She details her romance with this man and the heartbreak that occurs when he breaks up with her. So she does what any sane human would do to mend her heart, dive head first into an expensive learning program that, initially, she's not sure she should even take.
She describes her roommates, her classes, her instructors, and the food. The storytelling around each topic is straightforward and matter of fact.
I was lucky enough to get both an ebook and an audiobook. If you have the option, I recommend the audiobook. Washington reads it herself making it that much more personal. While the ebook was fine, the audiobook is enjoyable as many passages seem more like conversation than the written word. Overall, this book is fine but parts feel disconnected from each other, more like sections than a smooth story. The food descriptions make the book while her romance (?) with Leo definitely detracts. But Washington does show all sides of herself, even the ones that don't listen to her friends and his family not to follow this romance.

How to Cheat Your Own Death by Kristen Perrin

Annie adores her mother. She really does. Plus she knows her mother inside and out. Which is why she's so confused when her mother starts talking about Felicity (Fliss.) First of all, Felicity is a sculptor. Second of all, she's Detective Crane's ex-girlfriend. I mean, what the heck?
But then, Annie findes Felicity dead and missing a particular body part. Is it linked to the threats her mother's been getting? How can it not be? End the end, there are ties to her mother, father, and her Aunt Frances as history overlaps on itself, even as the chapters bounce back and forth between Annie's view and her aunt's diaries. The whole time, she is concious of the last prediction of Peony Lane.
There was a lot going on in this book. A lot. But there was some good character and relationship building.

Stay for a Spell by Amy Coombe

Tanadelle "Tandy" de Courcy is a bona fide princess. And, while she knows that many people would LOVE to be a princess, she's not fond of traveling thirty weeks a year. It becomes repetitive. And boring. And she has to follow a lot of rules. But at least she can keep reading. So, when she's cursed by a bookseller and is unable to leave a bookshop, it doesn't seem the worst thing.
Her parents are trying everything they can to undo the spell, including sending seven princes to kiss Tandy. And meeting each of the princes is a delight. At least for the reader. Tandy, meanwhile, is enjoying not having to do her royal duties.
A quite lovely book. It reminded me of Legends and Lattes with a charming world that was just a little sweet.

Pomona Afton Can Totally Catch a Killer by Bellamy Rose

After the last book, Pomona has been trying to turn her life around. But only a little. You can't expect her to ride the subway, after all. She's starting a foundation to help underprivileged children. There are a lot of nerves surrounding her first gala. She has to prove that she's changed her life. Too bad it's not going well even before a body comes over the balcony.
She's once again off to the races. And as much as she pretends she's working with Gabe, we get a lot of insight into the fact that she is very much still the pampered party girl that she started out as in the first book. She's growing but, ufda, as much time as has passed, it is slow.
This ending made a little more sense and I thought the book was fairly clued without being overt about the person behind the death.

Agnes Sharp and the Wedding to Die For by Leonie Swann

Bernadette and Jack are getting married. But the Foxglove Manor requires at least twenty guests to come. And it's not like the crew knows all that many people. So they start inviting anyone they can think of. They don't expect an old friend (?) of Bernadette's to show up. Nor do they expect her to die. Is this related to the verger who was also killed? Agnes does feel some guilt about forgetting to tell anyone that he was there. They found him eventually.
The wedding does go off, but with more than the most important hitch. And the ending on this one was... not my cup of tea. I'm going to be VERY interested to read other reviews on this one.

How to Be Okay When Nothing Is Okay by Jenny Lawson

I've enjoyed Lawson's books since the first one came out and started reading her blog soon after. She lays bare a lot of her life but this book is a little different. Instead of essays, thes are more like fleeting thoughts. Some are a little sad but most are philosophical and many feel like a warm hug of understanding.
If you've ever thought that no one in the world can understand you, I think you will find at least one essay that speaks to you. But probably more.
Some of the essays were a little TOO short (which sounds weird), but I could only read this book as chunks at a time.

Vengeance in Venice by Erica Ruth Neubauer

Jane and Redvers are on their honeymoon and enjoying their time alone. Except they're not as alone as they used to be since Aunt Millie has not only found them in Italy, she's insisting that they attend a party with her.
The soiree is being thrown by Clara, an heiress to the Morton salt company. She's eccentric and rude and Jane is stymied as to how she is a friend of Millie's. It's equally strange that this particular get-together includes a murder, that of Clara's second ex-husband, an Italian poet. The police immediately latch onto Clara's secretary, a woman Jane has met before.
The search for the killer will introduce Jane to a new kind of detective (inspettore) and cause her to question whether she is at good at reading people as she thinks she is.

This Will Be Interesting by E. B. Asher

Most people would be grateful to be brought back from the dead. And, while Galwell the Great's circumstances ARE fairly unique, he still feels like he should be grateful. He's trying very hard to be. But, for the rest of the world it's been ten years while for him it's the blink of an eye. His life just gets even weirder when an assasin tries to take him out.
River kills for the council. This one is weird, though. She's gotten instructions on who to kill but not why. And she always gets the why. She encounters Clara, a journalist who is also an old friend. Seeing her again is one of the reasons River decides to figure out what is going on.
I had no idea how Asher was going to follow the first book. How do you deal withsomeone whose death united a nation, but now the man has returned. I quite enjoyed it.

Everyone in This Bank Is a Thief by Benjamin Stevenson

Ernest is back in the thick of things, solving crimes using the rules of Golden Age mysteries. This time, he and Juliette are trying to get a loan to get their detective business off the ground but are having little success. Then, a letter comes from a bank that is willing to loan them money.
They head to the bank and discover that the man willing to lend them money wants them to prove themselves first by finding his brother. While they're there, the bank is going to be robbed. And by the end of the story, all ten people in the bank will have stolen something.
This is the closest of the sequels to hit the tone and feel of the first book with a setting that makes sense for the update to a golden age mystery.
